After getting injured just when he got the red plate last year, Kay de Wolf re-grouped over the winter and came out swinging in 2024. He has been the man to beat all year, and despite some exciting challenges from young teammate Lucas Coenen, de Wolf has remained very calm and very consistent.
Even if something goes wrong de Wolf is still making the the best of it. It seems it is all coming together for de Wolf, exceptional talent meeting maturity – and it’s a tough combination to beat!
After going 1-2 for the GP win at Lommel, and once again leaving people in awe at his sizzling sand speed, De Wolf now has a 65 point lead with six rounds to go as he edges closer to his first world title. We caught up the Dutch ace to talk about his day and his season plus discussed riding 450s and if going to America is an option for his career.

Kay, probably a tougher day than you expected but still, you have been really consistent in the championship, whenever something bad happens you are able to come out on top again!
We knew it was not going to be an easy GP but of course I didn’t make it easy on myself that second moto it was really…I don’t know what I was doing, making big mistakes that should not happen but it is what it is and we still came out with the overall GP win. I am really happy with the weekend and build from here.
Can you just explain how you go so fast in the sand? When people see the vidoes of you the comments are full of awe and respect of how you do it!
I think it just really comes naturally to me because I have been riding sand my entire life , it’s pretty normal for me, I think that’s the reason.

This year so far you seem really, really calm, if it was good you were level and if it was bad you were level and it shows in the results. Did you do anything over the winter to create that or do you think it is just maturity?
I think it is maturity. You just need to stay consistent and if you have a bad weekend and still be on the podium that is the main goal every weekend, that’s what we try to do even on a bad weekend, put it on the box.
Do you feel any pressure with the red plate or is it normal now with the red plate?
It is becoming normal. I don’t feel any pressure with it, I think it is a good position to be in, to be leading and having quite some points in front. It is feeling really comfortable to me so hopefully I can keep it like this for the rest of the season.
After all your injuries last season when you got the red plate, you came back for the Nations and rode good but to be able to reset over the winter and be the main guy now, it must feel amazing to produce that after the injuries?
For sure I am really happy to be one of the main guys, that is also the goal for everyone I think. I am happy with what I am doing at the moment and hopefully I can keep this going.
You rode a 450 last winter at a sand race and you looked really good on it, but you also mentioned you want to go to America. Do you know what direction your career is going to go in at the moment?
No, I really don’t know at the moment. For sure I am staying for another year here in Europe, maybe even longer but I don’t know what I will be doing. It can go both ways, it is up to me and what I want to do, I enjoy riding the 450, I ride it during the week sometimes but to race that thing is different! We will see what we will end up doing but I really enjoy the 250 for the moment and hopefully we can keep that going for a few years.
A lot of young riders really want to go to America, obviously it is really glamorous. I was at A1 and you can see why people want to go there. With Prado doing well and Vialle doing well, is that giving you the confidence you could succeed and what makes you want to go there?
I don’t know, I just want to experience riding supercross. I did a few supercross races when I was young on the 85, some Dutch supercross races. I just want to experience it on a 250, on a four-stroke let’s say. Maybe we can do it anytime soon and then we will see what we end up doing.
