We spoke to Kay de Wolf after a devastating display of silky sand riding brilliance at Lommel in MX2 to put the defending world champion very much back in contention for the 2025 world title.

It was a pretty perfect weekend, you made it look easy, but that track wasn’t easy for any normal human band, but how did you make it look so flowy, like you were able to actually enjoy those bumps?

Yeah, it’s what I’m used to, riding sand tracks, so yeah, it came pretty easy to me this weekend, did what I had to do, went 1-1-1, so yeah, showed that I had great speed in the sand once again.

Did you feel the pressure after last weekend, you made a lot of points up the weekend, the four lost points last weekend, and this was, I guess, a must-win, was that in your mind or because it sounded pretty relaxed?

No, because it was sand, it was of course pretty relaxed, but still I had to make up points as that is the goal every weekend. But yeah, still the goal actually stayed the same, put it on top of every single moto, that’s what we did, but yeah, it went 1-1-1, so we gained big points in the championship.

It feels like you’ve had issues all year, like we injures your missed auction with your ankle, you’ve never really got the show Kay de Wolf at 100%, is that the way it’s been, has it been frustrating?

Yeah, I think, of course it’s a bit frustrating, but trying my best, came in like you said, not 100%, I missed Hawkstone, somehow won the first GP, had the red plate for quite a few GPs, then had a few technical issues along the way, but yeah, we always kept fighting, so that’s paying off, so I think it’s what I’ve just heard, 36, 38, that’s just what I’ve heard.

Yeah, it was a good weekend, I think it was 60 or 70 coming into this weekend, I didn’t actually really pay attention to it, because I knew my job was pretty clear, I just had to go out and do my best and win it, so that’s what we done.

There was a two or three week break there, I think it was after the British GP, you and Liam as well, I don’t know what did you do in the break, but you came out far and both wasn’t just you, it was you and Liam, what did you do on the break to go to another level.

We actually had a holiday planned from my side, I think Liam still had his holiday, but yeah, I just kept mine, there was work which needed to be done, that’s what we did, we came out swinging in Finland.

Was that bike or mind or body that needed the reset?

No, I think I missed five weeks of bike time, I just went through from race to race ever since France. So yeah, I didn’t ride that much, so then I just went back to work, did a lot of motos during the week, worked on my consistency and I paid off in Finland, so yeah, that was the main reason.

Given you’ve just said that, is it harder to defend or is it just the fact that you haven’t been healthy?

Yeah, maybe it’s a bit of both, I haven’t been healthy, so I never had full potential, couldn’t show my full potential, but last few rounds I’ve been doing pretty well. Yeah, the starts put me on the back foot every single time in Lockey, yeah, just tried my best but did the best I could and this weekend. I had better starts somehow on Sunday, managed to change it all around and yeah, had a pretty short weekend.

I’m sure, especially after that, you still believe you can be world champion again, Simon’s never been in the position to win it like you have last year, so were you hoping that’ll help from the last five rounds left here?

Yeah, definitely, I know I’m capable of still fighting for this title, yeah, after England, that was our goal, we go back to work and try and get in this championship fight again.

And MXoN is in Ironman, America, pretty exciting for most people. I don’t know if you had any chance to think about that yet, but are you looking forward to going over there?

Yeah, definitely, yeah, I’m not sure if I will be selected, probably I will. But yeah, we always have to see and also have to see which class, because yeah, the other Dutch riders, if everybody’s healthy and yeah, if I need to jump in last minute on the 450 ride or I’m open for everything, that’s what I told the Dutch Federation. If they need me, I’m open for everything, so yeah, hopefully I can race the 250 class and show what I’ve got.

You’ve proven you’re fast on a 450 as well.

That’s why I’m open for anything, if I need to jump out of the blue on the 450, I’m pretty confident for jumping on the 450.

Thanks Kay, pleasure to watch your ride 250 round there, thank you.
