Deegan on taking Davies out – no regrets!

Haiden Deegan had no regrets about the move on teammate and friend, Cole Davies, that saw him not only take the win but also his first supercross title!

Deegan said on the podium: “I want to congratulate Cole, he is riding really good. Two laps to go I wanted the win I was going to do anything for it. I saw an opening and took the chance. This means a lot (on the title). Coming in people doubted me and thought I was all hype coming into supercross and motocross. They are just mad that I’m him and if you don’t like it you can suck!

And Deegan doubled down in the press conference saying: “Yeah, as much as I’m friends with Cole and stuff, when it’s race time and this is 500 grand, this is a new Lambo, you know? So it’s like, I got a lot on the line for it for myself and it’s just two laps to go. If you want to win, and that’s what I was raised to do is win on a dirt bike, I’m gonna take the shot if it was there and he left the door open.

It wasn’t, if you really watch it back, it wasn’t like a horrible dirty move. I just kind of tapped him and he went over the berm and well, unfortunately, it looks like he got stuck. I was like, there’s no way he’s stuck. I’m like, I’m gonna win the championship right now. It’s kind of crazy to me. Obviously, it’s not the way you want to win it,  but it’s racing, that’s how it goes and definitely will do anything to win.

Cold, ruthless and a winner, the 450 riders have seen first hand what they will have to deal with when Deegan moves up – even his friends aren’t immune from mind games and take-outs! Will the 450 boys stand up to him? They can’t say they haven’t been warned. They should all know what to expect and have a plan to deal with Deegan, Jett Lawrence included.

Deegan will do whatever it takes to win just like Ricky Carmichael. Don’t like it? He doesn’t care and why should he? Whoever he takes on, Deegan wins the mental game or gets to take them out without them doing it back to him. He makes sure he wins against everyone, he gets the first laugh and the last laugh.

But Cole Davies won’t forget and maybe, just maybe, that move may come back to haunt Deegan in the last two laps of a 450 AMA supercross title fight in a couple of years time against the arguably more talented and more technical Davies – this could be the career rivalry everyone is sleeping on.

Deegan might not just have Jett Lawrence and Chase Sexton to worry about in the premier class because Cole Davies is a generational talent and he is learning quickly. But that was a painful lesson on Saturday night, especially because it had already happened during practice, he got the warning.

Lesson learned the hard way.
