The King of Supercross, Jeremy McGrath, has given his educated opinion on Haiden Deegan as he comes into his first 450 Supercross season. And McGrath, who had the best technique in his era, feels that Deegan isn’t quite on the level of the Lawrence’s, Prado or Roczen when it comes to technique – but he is learning!
Talking to Jase McApline on Gypsy Tales McGrath said of Deegan: “I think he did great, he really got the 450 figured out – at least until the 80 percentile.”
“If I’m being honest, I think he has some work to do technique-wise to be able to be as efficient as Hunter and Jett and even Prado, for that matter and Kenny for sure, Kenny was amazing this year, it was beautiful to see, it was awseome.
“You are seeing Haiden figuring it out, he is figuring it out real-time in front of us. I think the best thing he could do for himself is sit behind someone the whole race is sit behind someone and watch them. And he doesn’t have enough patience to do that. He wants to pass them, but he could get out there behind those guys and watch what they are doing because, I think we know he has the fierce competitor inside, he has got the brain, he has got the dog, we can see it and he doesn’t want to take no for an answer, which is what you need.
“But I think he would do himself a favour if he got behind one of those guys that is more efficient that him and just tried to copy them, didn’t try to pass them, just try to copy them. Because watching the guys, as a fan, you can see he has picked up on some of the stuff that is needed, but there are areas where he flicks back into just riding it like a 250, just kind of rough-houses the bike, and only one guy can do that, and that’s Eli Tomac.”
