It may be one of the best battles ever in GP racing as defending world champ, Stefan Everts did all he could to defend 250 rookie and 125 world champ, the ferocious teenager, Sebastian Tortelli, at the Italian 250 GP back in 1997.
Rarely would you see Everts so aggressive, but he wasn’t giving into the kid, and while the Everts/Tortelli battles only last two years, it is one of the highest levels of speed ever seen in the sport. The were the fastest men on the planet at that time. Everts took the title in 1997 but Tortelli nabbed the title off Everts at in the final moto in 1998, it was a golden time of MXGP racing.
Will Lucas Coenen be the Sebastian Tortelli against Gajser and Herlings in 2025? The kid has similar raw speed to Tortelli back then and there is no doubt he could ruffle some feathers next year… if it is anything like the racing below, bring on 2025 with Lucas Coenen taking on the legends in MXGP!
