Video: 1993 250 Grand Prix review – Albertyn v Everts

It was Greg Albertyn’s self-admitted best year and form of his career as the South African came into 1993 as the reigning 125 world champ and won the premier class at his first attempt on the JHK Honda over a frustrated Stefan Everts, who couldn’t get the starts on his Suzuki compared to Albertyn’s rocket ship.

Albertyn said of the 93 season on the Whiskey Throttle show: “I thought I was going to do pretty well, I loved that bike, that 93 CR 250 was phenomenal, I loved that bike. In my entire career, the 93 season, I just kicked ass, it was amazing. When you are in that sweet spot you are so confident, I messed with my competition a lot mentally. Every body was so serious in Europe, I went down and was like, ‘hey how’s it going?! Let’s go bang bars!’

“They were all like, ‘argghh?’ Especially Everts, I had him worked after a couple of weekends.”

On the rivalry he said: “They hated me with a passion. Everts was and is a phenomenal rider, probably one of the most talented guys to set foot on a motorcycle, but he had his limits. If you upped the game he couldn’t go beyond his limits and if you got in his head he was completely toast and I got in his head.

“I didn’t have a problem with him, I just wanted to wax him! I think he is a good guy, I really feel for him for what he as been through, my gosh, it was really sad to hear.  But he was just born with every opportunity given to him on a silver plater and I had to work my way up and that’s probably why they hated me so much.”

Albee summed 93 up saying: “The best year of my career probably, on top of the world and confident.”

“I know for a fact I could have won probably ten world titles,” continued Albertyn. “But as I mentioned before, I am not that guy. I am not motivated to win the same thing over and over again, that’s just not how I’m wired.”

Everts told us: “For ’93 Greg came to the 250 class and we had those three motos and I struggled at times so much with my starts. My bike was not good.

“Greg, all the respect to Greg, he did good, especially in 93 he nailed most of the holeshots and I was in the back of the pack trying to come back and missed out every time, and he went home with the trophy, it was frustrating and to see him win the title was even more tough.

“But that is part of the development of a career, with ups and downs, that’s the way it is.”
