Who impressed: MX2 World Championship – Russia!

After winning the first six moto’s of the season, Pauls Jonass had two bad GP’s for his standards in Italy and Portugal but the Latvian talent was back to his best this weekend. The Russian track isn’t exactly a Pauls Jonass track but he looked superb all weekend long. In the first moto he passed Prado and controlled the gap at the front to take the win.

In the second moto he led from start to finish and takes another fifty points for the championship chase. He now has a twenty points advantage in the standings. After two bad rounds he did what exactly was required in Russia and more importantly he looked back to his very best.

After nearly getting himself on the podium at round one in Argentina it’s been a question of when and not if Ben Watson would get himself on the podium. The young Brit had to wait until round six but he’s finally got his first MX2 World Championship podium and he thoroughly deserves it.

Watson has been a breath of fresh air this season on the Kemea Yamaha and will be hoping for more podiums during the course of the season. “My first GP-podium ever! What a great feeling, what a great day. When I crossed the line I dind’t realise that I was on the podium. I tought I was fourth again. Then teamowner Hans came running towards me. Podium, podium, he shouted. Fantastic! Especially on this track, which I don’t like that much. I really want to thank everybody in the team. For the opportunity they gave me and for all their hard work. I’m glad I can give them something back now. There was only one thing missing today: my family. They stayed at home, in the UK. There’s only one solution: repeat this performance when they are around.” Watson commented on his weekend.

Watson wasn’t the only rider with the best GP result of their career in Russia as Michele Cervellin had a great weekend on his Martin Racing Technology Honda. The Italian has showed us glimpse of what he can do in the past but it all clicked for him Russia. In the first moto, he ended up an impressive seventh. However, he bettered that result in the second moto to come home in fourth and only missed the podium by a point.

Cervellin was under the HRC Honda awning last year but re-signed with the Martin Racing Technology Honda team for this season – a team he’s previously been with. The Italian always seems to produce his best with the team as it’s a good atmosphere for him. The result in Russia should now give him the confidence and belief that he can do it on a regular basis.

It was a good weekend for South African, Calvin Vlaanderen. The HRC Honda rider got his weekend off to a great start by qualifying in third and he’d have wanted something similar in the main races!

In the first moto, Vlaanderen ended up a solid sixth. The second moto went even better though as he ended up fourth, he was right on the rear wheel of Cervellin going over the finish line but just couldn’t make a move. Sixth overall made the Russian GP a good one for Vlaanderen, he’ll be wanting to get on the podium soon though!

The 2017 season didn’t go to plan for Stephen Rubini but he looks much better this year as it’s his second year on the 250cc and he looks at home under the Silver Action KTM awning. The French rider crossed the line in fifth in the first moto even after a small crash, if it wasn’t for that he might have been able to break into the top three as he was looking really good. However, a fifth is a great result for him and his best moto in the MX2 World Championship to date.

In the second moto, Rubini had a terrible start outside the top twenty but he worked his way through the pack nicely. He found himself in eighth by the end of the moto so he proved to himself he can come through the pack if necessary.  The hard pack track certainly suited his style as he looked to be loving it. A seventh overall is a great result for the young French rider and he’ll be looking for more results like that as the season progresses.

Spanish rider, Iker Larranaga tends to get overlooked in the MX2 World Championship but he’s quietly having a good season. Larranaga ended up tenth and eleventh in the moto’s to secure a tenth overall. It was the best GP of his season so far but as solid as he is he’ll be working to try and get a top five result!
