Who impressed: MX2 in Lativa

Thomas Kjer Olsen: Thomas Kjer Olsen took his first win of the season and he did it in style! The Dane pulled away from home hero and championship leader Pauls Jonass in the first moto and almost ran down Jorge Prado in race two to cement his overall win and firmly establish himself as a title contender. Olsen is always consistent but in Latvia he also produced race winning speed, bit by bit the pieces are coming together for Olsen and both Prado and Jonass won’t want him get anymore momentum as he chases them for world title glory this season.

Jorge Prado: Prado seems all grown up this year and appears to have fixed his weaknesses. Despite not winning the GP Prado ticked off a lot of boxes in Latvia. Coming through the pack used to be a bit of a problem for the Spaniard but, in Latvia after going down twice, he fought hard in the heat all the way to the end passing for tenth on the last lap.

In race two he won despite a crash forcing him to dig deep in the high temperatures and he got the job done to take the win. The heat was a big problem from Prado last year but he had to ride hard all the way to the end in both motos at the weekend and he looked strong all the way through, both mentally and physically. Prado is on his way to becoming the complete rider and you have to think joining the De Carli team and riding with Cairoli is helping speed up his progression.

Jago Geerts: The young Belgium talent has been very strong in his rookie season but to get his first podium of the year and challenge for the win in the second moto said everything you need to know about this kid’s potential. Prado and Geerts put front could be a sign of the future in this class with both teenage talents looking to be the future of  MXGP.

Geerts is more introverted than the charismatic Prado, he doesn’t smile easily but tha’s  not a bad thing, you get the feeling that his first podium isn’t his goal, it’s just a step along the way to acheive what he really wants – world titles. He is the real deal and you know he is putting in as much , if not more work , than anyone out there – he wants it badly! Even more impressive is the fact Geerts is still at school so the potential he still has once he can concentrate on motocross full time could take him to the next level.

Ben Watson: The Brit backed up his first podium with another good performance to take fifth overall making it a great day for Kemea Yamaha. Marnicq Bervoets must be very satisfied with his signing for 2018 with both riders exceeding their expectation for results seven rounds in. Whatever the structure there is at Kemea Yamaha is working and Watson is really showing the benefits and as he continues to put himself in these positions you feel he will get even more comfortable being a front runner as the season goes on – but now he has some competition from his Yamaha young teammate!

Micha-boy De Waal: De-Waal somewhat came out of nowhere to impress to two very good rides in Latvia. Injuries have hampered his progress this season, preventing any momentum building but he got to show what he could do in Latvia

“I’m super stoked! Finally I’ve been able to show what I’m capable of, stated De Waal after his performance. “The good feeling I had, was reflected in the results. Even after the first moto I was pretty pumped, because it was my best result of the year so far. Things went even better for the second race. Unfortunately I suffered quite a big get-off in the setup on the penultimate lap. Luckily I still came home eleventh.”
