Who impressed: EMX250 in Matterley Basin!

Steven Clarke: British fans would have wanted to see one of the British riders grab glory and that’s exactly what the Carglass Honda rider done. Clarke seems to love the track at Matterley Basin and he showed that this weekend.

Clarke didn’t make things easy for himself in the first moto by starting outside the top five but one by one he started picking off the riders in front of him. He got into second and had the young Tom Vialle ahead of him and with less than half a lap to go, Clarke made the move on the young French rider to take the win.

In the second moto, Clarke got a better start in second and made a pass on Goupillon for the lead which he stayed until three laps to go. Haarup passed Clarke but he still grabbed the overall victory in front of his home crowd. “I love this place and I was keen for a win when I was on the way here. I came here, did the work and did the business. I’m happy, I wanted a double moto victory but Haarup was just on another mission at the end of that race. He caught me off guard and once he passed me I just thought second was good enough for the overall and that’s what I was going for”, Clarke exclusively told Gatedrop.com.

Josh Spinks: Clarke wasn’t the only Brit for the fans to get behind as Josh Spinks had a superb weekend on his M Smith KTM. Spinks sat in third at the end of the first lap and managed to stay there despite some pressure from behind, he was only three seconds off the race win it what was an incredibly tight race.

The second race didn’t go quite as well for Spinks as he crossed the line in eighth but he still ended up second overall in a Brit 1-2. That’s the beauty of the EMX250 series, two solid rides can see you on the podium and Spinks benefited from that at Matterley Basin in what is his best ride of the year so far. “That was one of the things (improve his qualifying) I really wanted to do and other than that I just wanted to progress from the rounds I’ve done before. Two solid top tens’ or something like that and I’d have been happy with. To end up on the podium was really really good”.

Pierre Goupillon: The first round of the series couldn’t have went much better for the BUD Kawasaki rider as he won and took the red plate to round two. However, the last few rounds coming into Matterley Basin haven’t went to plan for the talented French rider as he dropped down to twelfth in the championship.

However, after showing much better speed at the last round of the French Championship, Goupillon brought that speed and confidence to England with him and his starts were on point too. Goupillion finished ninth and third in the moto’s at Matterley Basin to secure third overall and another podium. He’s now also climbed up to eighth in the championship and will hope the last few tough rounds are well and truly behind him.

Michael Sandner: The Austrian is a rider who has plenty of potential but hasn’t had the results to match his speed and it’s mainly due to crashes. At the last round of the ADAC Youngsters cup Sander showed good speed but a crash cost him of a moto win. However, he brought that speed with him to Matterley Basin and he was able to stay on to grab his best result in the EMX250 series.

Sandner ended up fourth and seventh in the moto’s to end up fifth overall. The Austrian led at the start of the first moto and would have learnt lots. There’s no reason why he can’t continue with these kind of results as the season progresses as he has the speed.

Mikkel Haarup: There’s certainly no doubting the Danish kids talent – he really is the next big thing. The one area for improvement he needs to make is cutting out his mistakes and crashes, once he does that he could be unstoppable in the EMX250 series.

Unfortunately, Haarup crashed twice in the first moto and ended up seventeenth which was very frustrating. However, in the second moto he took his time and planned his attack to perfection as he made a move passed Clarke with three laps to go. Remember this kids name as he could be a future star in the making, even Steven Clarke had praise for him, “Haarup was just on another mission at the end of that race. He caught me off guard and once he passed me”.
