Who impressed: EMX250 in Agueda!

Coming into the season, Mathys Boisrame was one of the favourites for the EMX250 title. However, the first round didn’t go according to plan for the French rider as he only picked up eight points. Boisrame decided to contest the MX2 World Championship in Arco di Trento and he finished fourteenth in the second moto which has seemed to help his confidence.

Boisrame seemed like a new rider at the second round of the EMX250 series and won both of the races to pick up fifty championship points – he now sits fifth in the series! The Assomotor Honda rider will now go into the rest of the series with plenty of confidence as he knows he’s got what it takes to win. It remains to be seen if he can continue to do so but he’s looking good!

It’s hard to not be impressed with Revo Husqvarna rider, Mel Pocock as he had another solid weekend. The Brit might not blow you away with his speed but he’s getting good starts and making it hard for the young guns to find their way passed. You can tell his experience is helping him as he won the series back in 2012.

Six years later, Pocock might be without a thumb but he’s still got the speed it takes to run at the front of the EMX250 Championship. Two fourth place finishes in Agueda were enough for an impressive second overall and he’s now the new championship leader of the EMX250 series. You can bet he’ll do everything possible to keep hold of the red plate for the rest of the season.

Consistency wins you titles and during the first two rounds of the EMX250 series, Giuseppe Tropepe has been very consistent. After two rounds, Pocock and Tropepe are the only two riders to finish in the top five during both rounds.

The Italian made it hard work in Agueda with some bad starts but he stayed calm and worked his way through the pack as quickly as he could. In the first moto, Tropepe was down on seventeenth at the end of the first lap but worked his way into a solid eight place finish. The second moto he started in fifth and that’s where he ended up and it was enough to secure a podium with a third overall. Tropepe might not have the speed of some of the young guns but so far he’s been smarter and more consistent which sees him sit third in the championship.

After two full seasons out injured it really is nice to see Maxime Renaux back at the races. Sometimes it’s easy to forget but Renaux is very talented and after two full seasons out injured, he’s starting to get his pace back.

In the first moto, the SM-Action Yamaha rider was thirteenth at the end of the first lap but he came through the pack to a good sixth position. The second moto was a similar story as he was outside the top fifteen around the first corner but he came back to eighth to secure a fourth overall. The one improvement he needs to make is on his starts, if he can get himself a top five start he could be in contention.

They say you win the championships on your bad days and after a few crashes at the first round of the Maxxis British Championship, Martin Barr only rode once coming into Portugal so it was a matter of damage limitation.

Barr used his experience and except for a small tip over in the second moto rode smart and used his head. The Revo Husqvarna rider ended up sixth overall which is a solid result and he even gained points on Pierre Goupillon who had the red plate after round one. A solid sixth keeps Barr right in the championship contention as he’s fourth but only eleven points down on Pocock. Hopefully Barr will be in better shape for round three in Russia and he can run closer to the front as we know he can.

Last year French talent, Brian Moreau won the EMX125 Championship and is now in his rookie EMX250 Championship season. The BUD Kawasaki rider needed a year in the EMX125 class before we saw the best of him and it might be a similar story in the EMX250 series. However, Moreau had a solid weekend at round two.

In the first moto, crashes ruined any chance of a good result but he came home in seventeenth to secure points. The second moto was much better as he was sixth on the first lap and he passed Pocock on the final lap to cross the line in an impressive third which is something to build on. Too many of the youngsters in the EMX250 Championship are throttle happy at times and it causes plenty of crashes but hopefully Moreau can stay consistent throughout the course of the season.

He’s only fourteen years old and not only did he qualify but what a second moto that was from Jett Lawrence! The young Aussie crossed the line in a superb eleventh position, just being able to qualify at fourteen years old is an achievement within itself but to get such a good moto under his belt is impressive.

In a few years’ time his older Brother, Hunter might have to start looking over his shoulder because it’s clear to see Jett is pretty talented himself! It’s also nice to see a Suzuki rider being competitive in the class.
