Who impressed: EMX125 – Switzerland

It was a career first for EMX125 rookie, Tom Guyon as he won his first EMX125 overall in Switzerland. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see the young French rider win a round. Last year he only competed at one round of the series and just missed out on the box.

Making the switch from TM to KTM, Guyon has been having a great season as a rookie in the EMX125 class. After his win in Switzerland he’s now fifth in the championship and the best placed rookie. Guyon has a lot of potential and if he continues to improve then he could have a very bright future.

Young Italian, Mattia Guadagnini really is on a roll at the moment and if it wasn’t for breaking his collarbone at the first round at Valkenswaard things would be very different. Coming into Switzerland,  Guadagnini had won three rounds in a row and it was very nearly four – he certainly had the speed.

The Maddii Husqvarna rider had a bad start in the first moto but came from ninth to third in a good recovery ride and give him an outside shot of the overall. He didn’t disappoint in the second moto as he won and if it wasn’t for the impressive display for Guyon it would have been another overall win for Guadagnini but the Italian can’t be too upset with his riding. Heading into the final round he sits thirty-nine points behind Benistant in the championship hunt, it looks unlikely he’ll win but stranger things have happened in this sport – it’s not over until it’s over.

Young Dutch talent, Rick Elzinga must have had one heck of a winter putting in the laps. Unfortunately, just before the first round he broke both of his wrists which meant he was out of action for a while. The MJC Yamaha rider made his return to racing in France where he ended up an impressive fifth overall.

Unfortunately, he then picked up another injury which ruled him out of action for the next two rounds. However, Elzinga made his return to racing in Switzerland and got on the box with a third overall. Despite picking up injuries during the season and missing a lot of bike time he’s somehow stepped up his game in 2018! He must have had an impressive winter putting in the work. He’ll be hoping to impress at the final round where he’ll be racing in front of his home crowd.

One rider racing in front of his home crowd this weekend was Mike Gwerder. The young Swiss rider has improved massively this season and possibly one of the most improved riders in the class. If we rewind to 12 months ago, Gwerder was battling just to qualify and didn’t pick up a single point during the season.

However, he’s clearly had a brilliant winter putting in the hard work required at that level. He went 6-6 in front of his home crowd to secure fourth overall which he’ll be happy with. Considering he’s just back from an injury too he’s shown that it hasn’t set him back speed wise.

It was a good weekend for the F4E KTM team, young Spaniard, Mario Lucas Sanz started the season off brilliantly by getting on the podium at round one but since then there’s been a bit of a dip in his form. However, the Swiss round was a bit more like it as he finished seventh overall. Lucas Sanz always shows great speed in Spain but he needs to perform more like that more often in the EMX125 series as he’s certainly capable.

The other F4E KTM rider that impressed was Dutch talent, Kjell Verbruggen who’s enjoying his rookie season on the 125cc. When Verbruggen doesn’t get a good start then it seems to be quite hard for him to come through the pack as the first moto proved when he came home in nineteenth.

When Verbruggen does get a good start he can hold the pace no problem. Valkenswaard is one example when he finished fifth in a moto there. The second moto in Switzerland was his best moto finish in the series so far as he crossed the line in third and looked brilliant. Considering he’s in his rookie year in the class he’s learning as the season progresses, with a strong winter he might just be one to watch out for in 2019.
