Who impressed: EMX125 in Trentino!

Who impressed: EMX125 in Trentino!

During the winter, Emilio Scuteri picked up a knee injury which hammered his winter preparation and the first round of the series didn’t get off to a good start in Valkenswaard as he only ended up eighth overall. However, the young Italian was in action at his home GP this weekend in Trentino and sometimes that can get the best of a young rider. However, the Celestini KTM rider put on a great show for his home fans as he went 2-1 in the moto’s to win the overall and his first EMX125 victory.

Scuteri has put his tough start to the season behind him and now sits third in the championship, he will be hoping this is the first win off many before the end of the season and he’s now a championship contender. We will soon find out if he can handle the pressure of being a championship contender.

He might be a graduate from the EMX150 series but Emil Weckman is now starting to show us what he can really do on the 125cc. The young Finn has plenty of potential and we are starting to see why he’s rated so highly.

Weckman had a great first moto as he won his first EMX125 moto and he won pretty comfortably in the end too. The Diga Junior KTM rider didn’t get as good a start in moto two as he was fifth on the first lap but he rode well to come back to second. As Scuteri won the moto it meant that Weckman had to be happy with second overall but if he keeps riding like he has been doing this season, you’d think an overall win is just around the corner.

Last season starts weren’t good for Rene Hofer and the curse of his bad starts came back to haunt him again this weekend. On the first lap of the first moto, the Austrian was buried down all the way in seventeenth position, not exactly ideal. However, one thing with Hofer is he always seems to stay calm underneath that helmet and doesn’t panic. Hofer worked his way up to fourth by the end of the moto around a track that’s hard to pass on, a very good recovery ride.

The second moto was a similar story as he was thirteenth at the end of the first lap. He didn’t make as many passes as perhaps expected during the first few laps but he rode smart and ended up coming back to third, another impressive ride. They say you win the championships on your bad days and considering his bad starts, that might just go down as a bad day for Hofer but he still ended up third overall. He’ll be looking to improve on his starts though and make things easier for himself as the season progresses.

Highly rated French rider, Tom Guyon would have been looking to improve on his seventh overall he bagged in the sand of Valkenswaard considering the hard pack track of Trentino were he excels. It’s important to remember that this is only Guyon’s third EMX125 event he’s competed at but he already looks comfortable.

The VRT 3as KTM rider was strong at Trentino track as expected and ended up 5-4 in the moto’s to secure fourth overall, just missing out on a podium. It’s been two consistent rounds for the young French rider but a podium shouldn’t be too far away from him, he just needs to keep plugging away.

After finishing ninth at the first round of the series, Raf Meuwissen was disappointed as he wanted more from himself. He proved at the weekend that he’s certainly capable of more that he shown us at the first round.

The Dutch rider was solid in the first moto to come home in eighth just edging out fellow countryman Raivo Dankers. The second moto was much better as he improved and ended up an impressive fifth. Meuwissen will be hoping for plenty more moto’s like that as the season progresses.

Germany might have another young talent to keep their eyes on as Lion Florian had a good weekend. Last season, Florian only collected twelve championship points but it looks like he’s had a solid winter behind him.

Florian had a solid start to the season in Valkenswaard ending up twelfth overall but he did even better in Italy.  He came home twelfth and an excellent seventh to end up seventh overall. If he can keep going in the same direction then he’ll be hoping to break into the top five as soon as possible, it looks like it might be on the cards too.

It’s always nice to see a privateer doing well and young Estonian, Meico Vettik had a superb first moto as he was banging bars with Scuteri in a great battle for second. In the end he lost out to Scuteri but he was able to keep Hofer at bay to come home in third, that’s his best EMX125 race of his career so far!

Unfortunately, the second moto didn’t go as planned as he had a disastrous start outside the top twenty and then had a few crashes when he was making good profess though the pack. Vettik couldn’t score any points as he came home in twenty-first but on a more positive note his lap times were pretty good. The young Estonian will be hoping to impress some of the teams to land a ride in the paddock and he might just be one to keep an eye on.
