Weekend watch: Portugal MXGP and triple header supercross!

It’s so far so good in Portugal as the early week’s rain seems to have passed enough to give some hope the racing might not be too bad this weekend and that it will at least go ahead.

MXGP released the following picture of the track and it looks in good shape, let’s hope the predicted rain today and on Sunday doesn’t wreck the track too much!

The MX2 series had a bit of life breathed into the championship after Pauls Jonass suffered his worst race of the season in Italy with his teammate Prado wining the GP and gaining 17 points in round – can Prado continue the momentum or will Jonass find the form and the starts that saw him win the opening six motos of the year?

In MXGP Jeffry Herlings took home a ten point lead after he win in Italy but Cairoli doesn’t usually let anyone get the upper hand on him for long and with the duo splitting moto wins here last year it could be another classic, if Cairoli can find that little bit of pace he was missing in Italy to match Herlings for 30 minutes. This track also suits the hard pack men with Clement Desalle leading the challengers but Gautier Paulin has historically rode well here too and Febvr and Gajser should be rejuvenated.

But if it rain who knows what will happen – mud specialist Gautier Paulin might even be the favourite or Britiain’s own Shaun Simpson!

The second round of the EMX250 championship also takes place in Portugal with Revo Husqvarna men Mel Pocock and Martin Barr hoping to get more moto wins against the future stars of the sport. Barr was back on the bike this week after a big crash in the British championship and will be looking to show the same speed he had in Redsand where he was the fastest man in the class.

Championship leader Pierre Goupillon won’t be far away and neither will countryman Tom Vialle who scored second overall. But watch out for last year’s EMX125 stars Brian Moreau and Gianluci Facchetti who never got to show their speed in Spain but could be back near the front this weekend.

WMX will also be there with Larissa Papenmeier leading the way after a great performance in Italy to take the win.

Over in the States things are being changed up with the exciting three moto format back for one last time in 2018. Also coming back is Justin Barcia who should add some much needed excitement back to the 450 class with Jason Anderson seemingly unstoppable enroute to the title!

The 250 East Coast returns with Austin Forkner and Jordon Smith trying to make some points up on defending champ Zach Osborne with just three rounds to go, so things could get aggressive!
