Weekend watch: Outdoor motocross is back!
This weekend sees the start of the 2018 motocross season and the year gets off with a bang as Cairoli and Herlings battle in the first round of the International Italian championship!
The course in Riola, Sardinia, is deep sand and a training base for some of the GP riders during the winter so the riders should be in relatively good shape and Cairoli v Herlings in deep sand is always a good way to begin the motocross year!
But, after Herlings got injured last season in his only pre-season race, he might just be riding a bit more careful this year as he won’t want to start the world championship at a disadvantage in Argentina. However, when the gate drops, the mind games and competitive nature of the top riders will still be there.
It also means seeing the riders on their new bikes, Ben Watson has moved to Yamaha as has Jago Geerts and Brylyakov, while Hunter Lawrence will also get showcase himself on the new 2018 Honda in the MX2 class, and Pauls Jonass will be showcasing the number one plate. In MXGP, Seewer will make his racing debut on the Yamaha with Lupino back on Kawasaki.
Meanwhile over in the supercross series in America, Eli Tomac will be gunning for three in a row as he bids to close the gap to championship leader Jason Anderson, who had his worst race of the year in Glendale last weekend – but still got fourth!
Ken Roczen and Justin Barcia also had impressive rides and look ready to win while Marvin Musquin said he finally got to ride again this week after his shoulder injury so he could also be closer to 100% healthy this weekend.
It is one of those weekend’s that fans always look forward too, with AMA supercross and elite level motocross racing all on together!
