Vlaanderen just misses out on the top ten at a brutal MXGP of Lommel

After a good MXGP of Limburg in midweek for the Gebben Van Venrooy Racing team and Calvin Vlaanderen, expectations were for much of the same at the MXGP of Lommel which was the last of the triple header at the brutal sand track.

The track crew made some track modifications to make the track different for the riders and after overnight rain, it was a completely different racetrack and even more challenging conditions.

During timed practice, Vlaanderen took to the conditions well and put in the fourth quickest time, his second best qualifying in the MXGP class.

Despite such a good gate pick, Vlaanderen didn’t get the greatest of jumps out of the gate in the first moto but he was still inside the top ten in a solid eighth. The MXGP rookie looked comfortable in eighth but after a few laps the heavy track conditions took their toll and the bike began to smoke. Losing power, Vlaanderen tried his best to nurse the bike home but on the final lap the bike expired. As Gajser the race winner had lapped up to thirteenth, Vlaanderen only lost one position and ended up thirteenth as a result.

Similar to moto one, Vlaanderen was eighth on the opening laps and was battling hard for a top ten result. Unfortunately, he suffered from two crashes at a track that was easy to make mistakes at, it dropped him down to seventeenth. Determined to make up for his mistakes he battled through to a well-earned thirteenth which was a good recovery ride.

13-13 on the day meant he ended up eleventh overall. Perhaps not the results that Vlaanderen would have wanted but the speed is good, and he’ll now head to Arco di Trento in Italy for the final three rounds of the MXGP World Championship.

Calvin Vlaanderen: (11th overall): Today was a tough one. I had good feeling in timed practice but couldn’t find that in the races. In the first race I struggled with the bike losing power and couldn’t really ride how I wanted. And second moto I had 2 crashes which put me outside the top ten. It’s unfortunate but we keep on learning.
