Verdict: A week of Latvian MXGP’s

The new normal for MXGP was in evidence for the first last week with three races in Latvia and a one day format – so was it a success?!

Yes, all in all it’s hard not to argue that it was great to see the series back but also great to see some fantastic racing produced each at GP. Jeffrey Herlings only won one moto out of six, something you would not have predicted going in, and the depth of field in MXGP meant battles throughout the pack especially with first turn carnage shuffling the order. It was frenetic out there in every moto!

Glenn Coldenhoff got Gas Gas their first GP win, the amazing Antonio Cairoli got his 90th in the most dramatic GP of the three with Herlings coming back to take the overall in the final GP of the week as Gasjer’s overall hopes and title chances took a hit with a costly DNF making it two no finishes over six motos.

The EMX races were also entertaining with the EMX Open class a welcome and much needed addition to the overall package. Riders who didn’t quite make it to the premier class or aged out of the 250 classes needed somewhere to go and this is perfect. Kim Savaste showed what he could still do on a bike while Toms Macuks showed great speed along with Karel Kutsur. It will be even better when more of the British, French and Belgian guys etc who aren’t racing MXGP join the party but under the circumstances the new series worked fantastically well, and should only get better from here.

In EMX2 Thibault Benistant was a class act, good leading from the front or coming through the pack, the Frenchman will have a a lot of teams knocking on his door for 2021 in MX2. Kay De Wolf cruelly got the win taken away at the third Latvia but his flow and corner speed was impressive on a difficult track. Fair play to to Bastian Boegh Damm for riding not fully fit and showing he still had the speed, that was a tough week for the former championship leader and the depth in EMX2 continues to impress.

Jago Geerts and Tom Vialle really established themselves as the men to beat in MX2, eight points separate the pair with Geerts had the edge with four moto wins to Vialles’s two but that crash in moto two of Latvia 1 hurt the Belgian in the points otherwise he could well have the red plate now.

Is the one day format better than the original two days of GP and EMX racing on both Saturday and Sunday? I would say no, you miss the build up of the MXGP classes over the Saturday that creates extra expectation for Sunday. Also for the fans attending it misses something but under the circumstances for 2020, it has worked as well as it possibly could.

It should also be said that the track crew did a fantastic job with the circuit each Grand Prix, slightly mixing the track up and allowing it to get rough but fixing areas that were getting too dangerous, it’s a big improvement on the last couple of years.

All in all it was a brilliant week of EMX and GP racing – let’s hope the rest of the season is good!
