Ben Townley took an emotional MXGP qualifying victory in Thailand and admitted, ‘it feels like winning a GP!’

Ben led the entire race despite severe pressure from first Cairoli and then Febvre. It was a big win for BT who was hovering on the edge of the top ten in Qatar but now will believe after this impressive victory that he is a genuine contender in MXGP.

Both Romain Febvre and Antonio Cairoli went with BT, first Cairoli was all over the Kiwi before he ultimately settled for third and let Febvre go for the Suzuki. Febvre was on the back wheel of Townley until he made a mistake over a jump and wisely backed it off in the last few minutes in the searing heat.

In MX2 Dylan Ferrandis took pole position and looked like he would be a genuine threat to Herlngs, but Herlings holeshot and disappeared leaving Ferrandis battling his way through in fifth position.

However disaster struck for Ferrandis in the waves secition when he binned it and immediately held his arm looking for medical attention. Ferrandis was grimacing in pain and it looks like a wrist injury or possibly dislocated shoulder. Yet again it looks Ferrandis’ championship aspirations could be over early.

It also takes the pressure off Herlings as Ferrandis was the only guy on his pace, it will be up to the rest to pick up their pace to try and run win with the Dutchman now!

Max Anstie upped his level today with an impressive third place passing Jonass to do it while Benoit Paturel was very impressive in second, the Frenchman loved the hard pack and might just be Herlings’ main competition tomorrow if he can get away ahead of the Dutchman.
