Tomac on trying to clinch that first supercross title

Eli Tomac revealed what he feels it will take for him to win the 2020 supercross title after still having not won the prestigious title despite being the fastest guy in the series for three years in row!

Tomac explained he feels he needs to manage the series better, but that it’s easier said than done! “For us its just been managing the series, admitted the softly spoken but fiercely determined US motocross champion. “It’s been a couple of different things, last year having the early season injury, that sets you behind a little bit and the year before the crash while leading the main event. It’s just managing the series, I have been able to do it throughout the motocross side of things but for supercross it’s managing from January to May, it’s just so hard and what is so gnarly about getting that 450 supercross championship. Really, that’s on my mind for this season is just trying to manage it right.

“Everyone says they feel good, but we are. Having Adam on board has been really good. We have both been pushing each other really hard at the test track, everyone says the same thing but that’s the way it’s been (for us), and we have been healthy so we are looking forward to getting going and seeing where we are at.”

Eli also revealed he has been doing a lot of start practice in order to put himself in better positions in the races from turn one: “It’s something I have been trying to fine-tune at the track and try different techniques. I even tried some one foot up starts, but went back to two feet! The way the class is now, every year it’s a really deep field and every year it will get harder and harder because it seems like everyone is copying each other now right? Everyone does the same programme, can do the motos and blah, blah, blah but so starts are super key in supercross. A lot of the guys that win the championship are really close to having the best average start position. so I better have my starts on point.”

The proof of course will be on the track, but if Tomac can get through January being in contention and not playing catch-up in points like he has in recent years, then he might have taken a giant step towards that long-awaited 450 supercross championship.
