Todd Waters – good fill in rider for HRC Honda?

When it was revealed that Brian Bogers had another injury setback which means hes underwent another operation, it meant the HRC Honda MXGP outfit needed to a replacement rider.

When I heard they needed a fill in rider, the first names I thought of for the spot where Xavier Boog and Jeremy Delince. Boog filled in for the factory Kawasaki team when Ryan Villopoto got injured in 2015 and Boog is a Honda man these days. Delince has filled in for the 24MX Honda team in the past and he’s one rider I’d like get a chance racing GP’s every week.

However, the HRC Honda team have decided to draft in Todd Waters in the end and I think it’s a great move. Waters isn’t a stranger to the MXGP paddock as he spent two seasons with the ICE ONE Factory Husqvarna outfit back in 2014 and 2015.

Waters had a good season back in 2015 ending up ninth in the World Championship standings. It was quite a surprise at the time that he wasn’t able to secure a ride for the following year, if he was still riding MXGP week in, week out he’d be a much better rider.

How might Waters perform during his fill in rides this year? Well, it’s worth noting there’s a lot of new competition in the MXGP World Championship. Waters will be racing the likes of Jeffrey Herlings, Tim Gajser, Max Anstie, Julien Lieber, Jeremy Seewer and Benoit Paturel for the first time.

The level is arguably much higher now than what it was back in 2015 so it might be harder for the Aussie to beak into the top ten consistently. However, he’s certainly capable of consistent top fifteen results.

As Waters is only under the HRC Honda awning until Brian Bogers returns to racing, the target for him to show enough speed to secure a ride in the paddock for the rest of the season. He’ll certainly be a good addition to the MXGP World Championship so hopefully he does enough to earn a ride.  At 27 years old this might be his last chance to earn a ride in the paddock.
