Todd Kellett offers injury update

In his latest blog, Todd Kellett offers an update after picking an injury at the ONK Dutch Championship at Oss.

Unfortunately not the blog I had planned, but it’s part of the sport we do and you’ve got to take the lows with the highs.

So, a couple of weeks ago, I went to the ONK championship round at OSS in Holland. Unfortunately whilst battling for 2nd position in race 1, we came up behind a slower rider and I ended up off circuit to avoid him. With a hay bale in sight it didn’t seem too much of an issue until I hit the hay bale with my left foot, and 2x 1meter wooden posts buried into the ground in the hay bale. The posts sent me into the metal railings that mark the track out and on to my head. A headache, dislocated thumb and broken leg is how I left the event.

To make things a little more complicated, it was just myself and Lucy. Dutch guys helped Lucy load the camper up and get us on our way to the hospital. We made the decision to try and get straight back to Belgium and get to a hospital that are very familiar with motocross and the top athletes in the sport. Dr Claes works at the hospital, some of you may have heard of him through treating Caroili, Herlings etc. So we attended there Saturday afternoon and it was confirmed that my left leg was broken and it was going to be a while before I could be back training again.

We have since had more x-rays and seen a specialist doctor in France as it was questionable whether my leg was going to need surgery or not. The decision at the moment is that with no weight bearing and a cast, it should heal on its own but we have another X-ray in a few weeks to confirm this. I have a spiral fracture, so it’s an easy break to displace, we are being careful at this stage to avoid any extra time of recovery. I have ligament damage to my thumb, but we are hoping with the recovery time of my leg, that will be healed too.

Since the crash, it’s been time to rest. With a lot of swelling and bruising, I’ve had to keep my leg elevated for the majority of the time. However, I have continued to train where I can and keep my heart rate up. It’s a bit of down time but we haven’t lost focus and we are continuing to work as and when we can.

I have started a 9 day course of Magnetic therapy in the east of France. 2 hours a day for 9 days. We are hoping this will encourage the start of the healing process and therefore avoid any extended length of recovery.

Myself and Lucy are staying in the camper here for the 9 days as we are 6 hours from where we live. Lucy has never driven a van, camper or abroad. She has now done 1000miles in the camper to get me to hospital, back to the team and now to try and get the best treatment. She hasn’t even curbed my wheels!!

We would like to both say thank you to everyone that helped us at the track, it’s not easy when your on your own in a foreign country, and having never driven the camper, it wasn’t an easy time for Lucy. But you all got us on the road and made sure she was ok. We have had a lot of support since and we are very grateful of you keeping us positive. It’s a step back, but it won’t stop us! We will be back ASAP.
