RIP Dirk Geukens

Totally unexpectedly, Dirk Geukens (57) died suddenly last night. The former Belgian 500cc champion didn’t feel so good the night before but no one had seen this coming. It is believe Dirk probably died as a result of heart failure.
Despite a late start as a motocross rider, the likeable Kempenaar had a great career. Geukens won bronze medal twice in the final standings of the World Championships 500cc (1990, 1991), won two GP’s, rode twice for the Belgian team in the Motocross des Nations and wrote his name in hsstory books of the popular Enduro, van Overpelt.
Towards the end of his career, Geukens became a factory rider for the “Husaberg Fourstroke Force” team of Joël Smets and Ludo Van Der Veken.
For years after his professional farewell, he traditionally made guest appearance during the motocross of the Keiheuvel in Balen. Dirk was also involved in Motorsport Future from the beginning and remained committed to motocross. Among other things, he accompanied fellow villager Jago Geerts.
We at Gatedrop wish Dirk’s wife Gerda, his children, family and friends much strength during this difficult period.
