Jeffrey Herlings took the early lead and cruised to an easy win as the battled raged behind him. Gajser hit the deck on lap one, colliding with Van Horebeek and rode through the field to seventh only to crash in the final turn to lose a position to Paulin and come home eighth.
Jeremy Seewer took a very impressive second after having to pass a very strong Mitch Evans who held a smart Cairoli off to finish third. Clement Desalle crashed twice but still finished fifth to underline his speed.
Herlings said: “It’s always better to start with a race win and not start at all like I did last year! The track is tricky, a lot of lines and deep ruts.”

Tim Gajser made amends for a crash happy race one to dominate the second moto ahead of a smart Jeffrey Herlings, who, once he passed Cairoli for second, appeared content to stay there in order to win the overall on a very tricky track. Cairoli too settled for third and admitted afterwards he is dealing with a knee injury sustained at Lommel just ten days ago. Gautier Paulin rode well for fourth with Desalle holding off a charging Coldenhoff for fifth. Mitch Evans overcame a bad start to take seventh showing he could ride from the front and the back, even if Coldenhoff did pass him late on.
