Osborne on wining two in row and leading the 450 US motocross championship

Zach Osborne had a dramatic day at Loretta Lynn’s after almost not qualifying in the morning to winning the overall in a last lap, last moto shootout with Marvin Musquin. The American, with Eli Tomac going 9-24 thanks to two DNFs, now has a 19 point lead over Marvin Musquin in the championship.

But the experienced American isn’t getting carried away despite the success of the opening two motocross events of the season.

“It’s always nice to be leading points and have red plates but there is a lot of racing left, comment the former British champion in the press conference. “We still have seven rounds left if everything goes to plan. Right now the most important thing for me is keep getting points every weekend and keeping the lead as long as I can because we don’t really know what’s going to happen in the coming weeks or months, that’s the biggest thing so keep hammering away at it and stacking points.

“I’ve been through a lot of highs and a lot of lows that helps me keep things into perspective. As we saw today with the practice thing, it all can in a moment go away, so for me it’s just focusing on what I am doing, staying in the moment. I was able to go back to the truck today after the practice thing and do some deep breathing, calm my mind and know that there is a job to do. That’s what I always try to do, show up everyday and be the same as I am. If I win I win and if not I can go home and practice and be better the next time.

On the drama of his bike not starting for the entire group A practice session and then being allowed to go out in the group B session, Osborne said: “I was pretty calm, I didn’t know what was going to happen or whatever. I mean, what do you do? It’s out of your control, you just stand there and be ready to do your job when you’re called upon. I had no clue what the rule was, I didn’t know anything about it.

But he admitted his results exceeded expectations after the morning stress: “If someone would have told me I would have got two fifths I would have said, ‘sign me up!’ To go 5-1 for the overall that’s not a common win score and to do it after the events of the morning was just awesome. The whole team rallied around us when we were having an issue this morning. The boys changed three engines in between the motos, it was a hard day for everyone on the team. To reward them with an overall win, and RJ (Hampshire) got a moto win (in the 250 class) which was super good. It felt awesome to kind of give back to the boys. “
