Jonass wins MX2 as Watson gets first podium!
Pauls Jonass controlled both motos in Russia but Jorge Prado pushed him hard in both races and even made a last ditch attempt in moto two to get the win and the overall – but was half a bike length away from pulling the pass off that could have resulted in Jonass on the deck!
Jonass who extended his championship lead to 20 points over Prado said: “After Italy and Portugal I was really bummed about my riding, I went back to Belgium and straight back to work. It was a nice race, I enjoyed coming here.”
Prado said he decided to ride clean with his pass attempt: “At the end of the moto I felt he was quite weak so I tried to push as much as possible in the last lap I had the chance but I ride clean and didn’t want to touch him.”
Behind them in third overall was a delighted Ben Watson who rode very well for third in race one and took a solid sixth in race two enough for his first ever GP podium – and Yamaha’s first MX2 podium of the season!
A shocked Watson commented: “I have no words at all. My mechanic didn’t put anything on the board about the podium. When I came over the line my team manager told me and I just dropped the bike and had no words! It’s been an amazing weekend.”
