Interview: Jay Lamb – Stepping away from the sport!

Young Scottish rider, Jay Lamb picked up a serious injury whilst preparing to take on the MX1 Maxxis British Championship on his Feehily MX Suzuki.

Unfortunately, the injury was so bad, the young Scot has decided to step away from the sport at a high level which is a shame.

Lamb was one of the youngest riders in the MX1 class and could have had a good future ahead of him but his health is taking priority at the moment.

We caught up with Lamb to discuss his reason’s for stepping away from the sport.

Gatedrop: Jay, let’s start with the injury. For people that aren’t sure can just remind them of your injury?

Jay Lamb: Yeah, I was up at Tain winter training getting ready for the start of this season just before the new year. I had a big crash over the back table top and had to get air lifted to Inverness hospital. I can’t really remember much of the crash but the outcome after a few MRI and things  was a torn PCL and LCL in my left knee which needs operated on, my right shoulder to get plated and screwed to stop dislocating and my rotator cuff ligament fixed in my right shoulder, broken shoulder blade, broken rib and severe concussion. Yeah, it was my biggest crash yet.

Gatedrop: You’ve made the decision to step away from the sport. Just how hard was that decision to make?

Jay Lamb: Yeah, honestly the hardest decision I’ve ever made. Motocross has been my life since I was 3 year old and it will always be my life but for now I need to step away for my health, a lot of people might disagree but my health comes first in this matter.

Gatedrop: When you were drawing up the pro’s and con’s of making the decision, what was the weighing factor for you to decide to step away?

Jay Lamb: Honestly the main part is my health. It’s no secret that for most of my career I’ve had a lot of injuries and it is down to wanting it too much and pushing way to hard when it wasn’t needed but obviously the cost side of things plays a massive part in things as well.

Gatedrop: Obviously you’re still young and could have had a bright future in the MX1 class, is it frustrating knowing that could be the case?

Jay Lamb: Yeah, very very frustrating. I knew I had what it takes, I was willing to work my butt off every day! But it’s super hard to compete with the top boys when you’re working 40 hours a week then having to go training every day and trying to get out on the bike it’s hard but I was doing it and loved it but everyone knows the risk out there and injuries do happen unfortunately.

Gatedrop: When you look back at your career, what would you pick out as the highlight?

Jay Lamb: Ohh I could think of many highlights but, my first 85cc small wheel British championship win at Finningley Moto Parc when I crashed 4 times and passed for the win on the last lap!

Gatedrop: In a few years time would you consider making a comeback if you feel ready physically?

Jay Lamb: I would like to think so but you never know what is around the corner in life.

Gatedrop: Will you still attend some races as a spectator or will you stay away? It might be hard to watch!

Jay Lamb: Yeah of course, it’ll be hard to watch but I’ll be going to Duns for the Maxxis this year as it would have been my home race as I only live 45 minutes away from there.

Gatedrop: What’s the future hold for Jay Lamb?

Jay Lamb: Well right now a few operations (laughs). But I think I’m going to go to Australia for a little while once I’m fully healed and just see what happens. I would really like a go of doing some Enduro or extreme Enduro stuff. It looks really fun and something a bit different.

Gatedrop: What’s your thoughts be on the British MX1 class so far this season? It’s looking fast with Bobryshev, Nicholls, Irwin and EBB at the front!

Jay Lamb: Yeah this year it’s going to be a close one I think and it’s cool to see Nicholls back in it and see Bobryshev over. it’s good for British motocross but it will be interesting to see who finishes on top.

Gatedrop: Anyone you’d like to thank?

Jay Lamb: Yeah most of all my mum , dad and my family they have done absolutely everything for me since day one also my girlfriend and her family.
