Herlings: It was nice to battle with Tony!

It was a great home GP for Jeffrey Herlings as he won both the moto’s at a very cold Valkenswaard but that doesn’t tell the whole story.

After a crash during the qualifying race and a pit stop, Herlings only qualified nineteenth which meant he had a bad gate pick for the main races on Sunday.

Herlings had to come behind as Cairoli who’s known for his good starts didn’t disappoint in that respect. In the first moto Herlings was fourth on the first lap and managed to get his way into second on lap six, he was starting to close on Cairoli but then the Italian crashed handing the first moto win to Herlings.

The second moto was a completely different story though as Herlings was down the pecking order outside the top five but he already worked his way in fourth by the end of the first lap. By lap three Herlings was already into second but Cairoli already had a huge gap out in front.

In front of his home crowd, Herlings was determined not to let them down and he started closing the gap on the nine times world champion. With three laps to go Herlings made the move and went on to grab the second moto win and fifty championship points in what was a great ride.

The pace Cairoli and Herlings showed meant Paulin who ended up third was over a minute behind which is impressive from the KTM duo.

Herlings had the following to say regarding his win:

On his GP..

The start was actually really good. There was half a bike length in it for the holeshot. We both got on the gas and went really wide. I had to work my way through the pack, Tony got the holeshot so he was pretty much checking out front.

It was tough, I had to overtake plenty of guys but it is what it is. We came back strong and managed to win both moto’s.

I am looking forward to Redsands next weekend, I’ve been through there a lot over winter so I kind of know the track, really looking forward to it.

I want to thank everyone out there today supporting us in the cold, it was a very cold few days. It was a good weekend for us.

On battling with Cairoli..

It’s nice to battle with your team-mate and battling with Tony was really clean, I want to keep it that way. It was a lot of fun, he had a big gap so I had to chase him, it was very impressive.

It was nice to battle with Tony, it’s always good and I enjoyed it. Hopefully many more races like this are to come, we keep going full gas!
