GP of Mexico: Who impressed in MX2?

GP of Mexico: Who impressed in MX2?

Before the start of the season the only rider to have an MX2 overall to their name was Thomas Covington and he made it number two at the weekend. Back in 2013 Covington made his first appearance in the GP paddock racing in the EMX250 class. That day he finished fourth overall (Jeremy Seewer won!). Covington liked the GP’s that much he decided to stay and has competed in the MX2 World Championship ever since the 2014 season.

The American has improved a lot over the last couple of years and the switch to Husqvarna looks to have done him the world of good. Looking at the Mexican track you wouldn’t have thought it would have suited him but he had the race of his life! He didn’t get the best of starts in the first moto but brought it home for fourth which was a good start to the day. He grabbed the holeshot in moto two and managed to respond to Jonass when he found his way past to grab the second overall of his career.

Suzuki rider and championship leader, Jeremy Seewer showed some very good speed this weekend as he seemed to love the track. He got the holeshot in the first moto and ran away with it, he looked to be in a league of his own and won by nearly eight seconds.

He didn’t get the best of starts in the second moto as he was back in sixth. He put his head down and went on a charge to get himself into third, he was the quickest rider on the track and at one stage it looked like he could catch Covington who was out in front. However, he made a huge mistake when trying to pass Jonass which put him back down to fourth. He just couldn’t get past Lieber in the closing stages so he had to settle for second overall which is a missed opportunity as he was definitely the quickest rider this weekend.

It was another good weekend for Belgian rider, Julien Lieber who got himself back on the podium and at a track he didn’t look all that comfortable at which makes the podium even more impressive.

Lieber sits fourth in the world championship standings level on points with Benoit Paturel, by no means is he out of this title race. Julien is working with Yves Demaria this season and he looks to be getting the best of the Belgian.

It was definitely Calvin Vlaanderen best GP of the year in Mexico as he ended up eighth overall. That is definitely a step in the right direction for the HSF Logistics rider. He was very impressive in the first moto as he was sitting comfortable in second for eight laps but then he suffered from arm pump and faded to sixth.

He didn’t get a good start in the second moto so he crossed the line in twelfth which is a solid result. Calvin will definitely be hoping for more top ten results as the series heads back to Europe for round five.
