GP of Germany: Who impressed in MXGP?

GP of Germany: Who impressed in MXGP?

Eight times world champion, Antonio Cairoli has had a wonderful career and he now has eighty GP wins to his name after winning in Germany. In the first moto, Herlings passed him and at one stage it looked like he might run away with it. However, Cairoli upped his game as he does so many times. He caught Herlings and put him under pressure but just couldn’t get around him.

In the second moto Cairoli grabbed the holeshot and always had the win under control. He always performs well at the Teutschenthal track and he didn’t disappoint this weekend either. He now has a lovely forty-four points gap over Gajser in the championship race. It would take a brave man to bet against the Italian to clinch his ninth World title!

The Bullet is back! Jeffrey Herlings was flying all weekend long and at a track that isn’t one of his favourites either. In the first moto we finally saw him battle with Cairoli and Herlings responded well to the Italian’s pressure late in the race.

He didn’t get a good start in the second moto as he was outside the top five. He worked his way up to second but by that stage Carioli was gone. He lost out on the GP win due to the start, once he gets those sorted he could be hard to stop. He is good at coming through the pack after bad starts but it’s hard to win when you start outside the top 5 in MXGP and he has realised that!

After a disappointing GP of Latvia, Gautier Paulin was much stronger in Germany as he bagged himself another podium with a third overall. He seemed to improve all weekend long, even though he finished third in the first moto he was over twenty seconds behind Cairoli!

Paulin improved in the second moto and cut it down to nine seconds. GP21 will be hoping to battle with them this weekend at his home GP in France. In terms of the championship things are looking great for him as he’s only one point behind Gajser for second spot!

It’s only a rookie year for Max Anstie in the MXGP class after moving up from MX2 but he’s gelling well with the 450 Husqvarna. He finished the moto’s in eighth and sixth to end up seventh overall. He seems to be much stronger in hard pack on the 450 which is pleasing to see. He should continue to improve over the course of the season.

This season so far has been a struggle for Romain Febvre but after making changes to the bike he was much improved this weekend. He ended up fifth overall and will be hoping it’s the start of some good results. Surely the ex-World Champion can win at least one GP before the end of the season? Another rider that improved this weekend was Glenn Coldenhoff, a sixth overall at that kind of track is pretty impressive for the Dutchman. Like Febvre, he will want to build on this.

One rider that is really impressing this year is 24MX Honda rider Damon Graulus. He ended up thirteenth overall which is a career best for the Belgian in the MXGP class. Considering he is riding with a standard engine that is incredibly impressive. Graulus will hope to keep up these performances in a brutal class.
