Fernandez and Beaton on Latvia!

Fernandez and Beaton on Latvia!

Despite a difficult weekend during the Latvian Grand Prix, Jed Beaton maintains his strong fifth place in the MX2 World Championship. The Aussie ended up thirteenth overall (14-10) at the sand of Kegums. His team mate, Ruben Fernández-Garcia showed some great speed at the Grand Prix but mistakes cost him. It meant the Spaniard ended up sixteenth overall. Adam Sterry picked up an ankle injury at the Dutch Masters which ruled him out of the GP and he will also miss Germany this weekend.

In the first moto, Fernandez took a good start as he found himself in the top ten. He was able to move himself into a solid eighth until the end of lap ten which he made a mistake which meant he dropped down the pecking order. The 18-year-old ended up seventeenth after his mistake which was a shame. Beaton got a bad start as he was outside the top fifteen after the first lap but he worked his way up to a solid tenth before dropping back to fourteenth again, he would have been disappointed with that.

Both riders were determined to put a tough first moto behind them and Fernandez got another good start as he was sitting in sixth after the first lap. The speed was high at the front and Fernandez eventually ended up thirteenth which was a solid moto. The young Spaniard continues to improve after every single GP. Beaton was having a much better moto as he was nicely positioned in seventh but then Covington collided with him meaning he dropped down the order to thirteenth which was a shame as he upped his game after the first moto.

Ruben Fernandez: “Saturday I was fifth in the free practice and eighth in time practice. I felt pretty good as Kegums is a track that I like. Then went to the qualifying race, didn’t start very good as I got stuck in a crash with some other riders, luckily I didn’t loose too much time so I could catch the group of riders on the next corners. Don’t know how I did it but I was 14 the first time that I crossed the finish line, so it wasn’t that bad. Finally I finished 8 after had some good battles during the moto, I can say that I enjoyed it and that I had a lot of fun.

Sunday started quite good too, I got seventh in the warm up, so that’s not a bad way to start the day. Then later in the first moto I had a very bad start but again I found the way to make some quick passes in the first corners so I crossed the finish line in tenth, then when I was eighth I had a massive crash when it was just 7min + 2 laps to go, so I’m not very happy about that because I felt myself capable to keep it in that positions. I walked away from it and I stepped back on the bike while I didn’t loose many positions, the problem was that I got hit on the head pretty hard by my bike when I crashed so I didn’t feel good for a few laps as I was a bit dizzy and I even had to roll some jumps for like two laps. But at least I could score some points as I finished eighteenth, nothing to be happy about but I try to keep it positive. Then second moto I surprised myself with a good start as I was sixth on the first lap but the tank was empty this moto and I just fell down to thirteenth”.

Jed Beaton: “Well the weekend didn’t really go to plan with two bad starts. In the first moto I had a small issue with my throttle and couldn’t ride to my potential, second moto had a good flow going until I crashed then I couldn’t get it back, so I’m very disappointed about it. Now I’m just looking forward to Germany.
