Emil Weckman claims maiden EMX125 moto win!

Finland’s Emil Weckman (KTM Diga Junior Racing) raced to his first career EMX125 moto win at the Grand Prix of Trentino. Weckman matched overall winner Emilio Scuteri in points but he just missed out on the top step of the podium after finishing second in the final moto.

After a wet week the compact, stony layout of Pietramurata was more rutted than normally. For Weckman, a former EMX150 moto winner at the scenic Northern-Italian track, it didn’t seem to matter. In time practice group Emil took his KTM 125SX to second.

Motivated to grab a strong start Weckman delivered on his promise and captured the holeshot. The 16-year old kept his calm, built up to a 6-second gap and was never challenged for his first ever EMX125 moto victory. Losing some time in traffic with lapped riders the double EMX150 champion eventually came home almost 4 seconds in front of home rider Scuterri.

In spite of another great jump from the gate the JTM Diga Junior Racing rider hit a muddy patch in the middle of the start straight that knocked him back a couple of places. Fifth into the second corner, Weckman gradually recovered to third. After overtaking France’s Guyot Emil tried to hunt down Scuteri but the Italian had already pulled a considerable gap by then. Fourth in provisional standings before the weekend Emil is now second with only six points separating him from series leader Rene Hofer.

Avrie Berry, competing in her first full season of FIM WMX World championship racing, had to overcome crashes in both motos of the women’s opening round of the season. While she rode better in the second moto she had to settle for 24th again. The KTM Diga Junior Racing crew heads to Agueda Portugal this weekend for the second rounds of respectively the EMX250 and WMX series.

Dirk Saelen, team manager and team owner: “I have to admit that this great result from Emil took a while before it sank in. It’s even hard to find the right words to describe the emotions but one thing is crystal clear. Even when this result came unexpected, it’s encouraging to see how the hard work of the last few months start to pay off. Emil was cool, calm and collected. He rode with his head in a way you’d expect from a seasoned veteran! Avrie had a difficult weekend but in the first half of the second moto she started to show what she’s capable of. Let’s keep the momentum going!”

Emil Weckman: “I had a really good start in the first moto and especially the first ten minutes I was pretty happy with my riding. Okay, it’s been a while since my last European win but I didn’t feel any pressure when I was leading because I’m used to be in front. When I’m leading I don’t make mistakes it seems, but when I’m at the back I make mistakes! To leave Arco with a win and a podium was not what I expected so I’m not that disappointed that I didn’t get the overall! For me to make the box on a track that’s a difficult one is a big step in the right direction. Kegums is definitely a better track for me so my aim is to get on the podium in Latvia again.”

Avrie Berry: “Arco was a learning experience for me. I wanted to score points and I wasn’t able to do that but it just makes me more excited for next weekend! I know I can get a good start and I’m able to run in a higher position. The race weekend also made it obvious that I need to work on my endurance. Each time I made mistakes when I got tired. We know that it will be an ongoing theme to get used to the European tracks but that’s what we’re here for!”
