Career best for Larranaga on his DIGA-Procross debut!
The MXGP of Great Britain took place in Matterley Basin during the first weekend of June and the DIGA-Procross team made the step up to the World Championship with Iker Larranaga and Brent van Doninck. Dylan Walsh was also behind the start line at the fifth round of EMX250.
Dylan Walsh, who was fourth in the EMX250 championship after four rounds had a bad weekend in Matterley Basin. The young New Zealand rider struggled in the qualification and got the 22nd start gate for the races. In moto number one Walsh had a good start and fought till the end of the race for a top ten finish. Unfortunately two riders passed him in the last laps and he finished on P11. Moto number two his start was pretty good but in turn 2 Walsh made a mistake and lost a lot places. At the end of the moto he could fight back to the points and collect important points for the championship.
It was the first weekend for Iker Larranaga under the awning of Team DIGA-Procross but the weekend went really well. On Saturday lunchtime during the time practice, Larranaga showed his speed and finished time practice in 8th position. Brent van Doninck was just 0.9 second slower then Larranaga and finished in 15th.
In the qualifying race Iker Larranaga had a brilliant start and could hold P9 from the start till the end. On the other hand, Brent van Doninck had a very bad start and had to fight his way through the field to P22.
At Sunday lunchtime the first moto took place and Larranaga got a good start. He was battling for a top ten position during the whole moto. During the race he could manage to get to P7 but due to an impetuous maneuver by a rival he lost some positions and finished 11th in moto one. Brent van Doninck had a bad start in moto one and came back on P20 from the first lap. Due to many duels he lost some time but could manage to finish moto one in P15.
The second moto on Sunday afternoon went really well for Iker Larranaga. He was from the beginning in the top ten positions and became faster and faster during middle of the race. Through clever lines and overtaking he made it to P6, which markes his career best moto result. Brent van Doninck had again a bad start and had to chase the whole field. But the young Belgian fought himself back to the points and finished moto two in P18.
Overall, Iker Larranaga finished 7th and was able to gain two positions in the championship. Brent van Doninck scored important points and finished 16th overall.
Iker Larranaga: “It was a good weekend for me. Feel good with my new bike and team. We keep building from this. “
Brent van Doninck: “It was a hard weekend for me. We have to continue our work and stay focused. I hope the results will come soon “
Justin Amian: “I’m a bit speechless about the weekend and the last weeks. Iker Larranaga rode at his debut directly his career best result and showed how fast he is. Unfortunately Brent had some bad luck this weekend but we keep working hard to bring him back to the front. In the EMX250 Dylan had a bad weekend but he have to continue working hard and stay focus.”
