Can Max Anstie turn around his season at Matterley Basin?

There was a lot expected of Max Anstie coming into the 2018 season but unfortunately he picked up an injury after just two rounds of the series. Anstie missed three rounds of the series but made his return to racing in Russia.

Anstie who was a rookie last year ended up ninth in the championship even though he missed two rounds of the series through injury. It was impressive and he ended the season on a high after winning the MX1 class at the Motocross Des Nations which was held at Matterley Basin – he even beat Jeffrey Herlings in an epic battle during the final moto.

However, since making his return to racing Anstie hasn’t been posting the sort of results that was expected of him. Perhaps his home round of the MXGP World Championship comes at the right time as with his home crowd fully behind him he’ll be motivated to put in two good results.

Since returning to racing his best moto was in Latvia when he crossed the line in seventh during the first moto which is a solid result but he’ll be hoping for more top five results and especially after an impressive rookie season. Coming into the season many even thought Anstie would have been the dark-horse for the MXGP World title but unfortunately that hasn’t been the case.

Anstie loves the Matterley Basin track and will be motivated to try and get back into the top five where he’d have expected to be on a regular basis coming into the season.

Who knows, two good results at Matterley might do enough to turn his season around and we might just see him at the sharp end again. It’s worth pointing out his deal with the ICE ONE Husqvarna team runs out at the end of the season so he’s also chasing a contract for the 2019 season and beyond.

With the weather looking good for the weekend, the temperatures are expected to be 20 degrees plus the British fans will be out in full force getting behind their riders. Don’t forget Anstie won’t be the only Brit in action as Shaun Simpson, Tommy Searle and Graeme Irwin will also be racing the MXGP World Championship this weekend at Matterley Basin.
