Cairoli on his retirement from MXGP
Tony Cairoli has said in his own words his goodbye to the motocross world on Instagram and the comments from the top riders in the MXGP, AMA MX/SX and road racing below his post tell you everything you need to know about the amazing rider and person.
“I really have to tell you: it wasn’t an easy decision to make, but the time has come to close one chapter of my life and open another, it can’t always be Speed, Mud and Glory,” said Cairoli. I never stopped to think about what this moment would have been like and not it’s kind of impressive to be here in front of you. You know that I don’t particularly like talking about myself in public, but you’re not just an audience you have been an important, fundamental part of my last 18 years.
Now I’ll have more time for Chase, Jill and myself. My thoughts go to my mother, father, my family; those years in Sicily when the first races were just a dream and sacrifice, for everyone. Every time I won a title, my thought went to them: nine titles came, something I could never have imagined when, around the house, I burned gallons spinning in circles.
I’ve always said that numbers and statistics don’t mean much to me, and I really think so… I live the moment and the victory is only the result of the work I do with passion every day. I’d like to win again, of course, but it wouldn’t add much to who I am. My first title was already something incredible, the realization of a dream for me and my family. Shortly before, at nineteen, I was about to stop, then the call of the De Carli team gave new impetus to my career. That day in October my life changed and after eighteen years we are still here, working and fighting, trying to win another title with the same team:
A unique thing in the history of our sport and our motivation for this challenge is always the same, like the first day. On this journey I was lucky enough to meet special people, and in addition to Claudio, his team and his family, I would like to thank Pit Beirer, an exceptional person who was fundamental in making us feel part of the KTM family from day one.
For sure I will stay in the environment, motocross is still my life, it will remain my great passion and with KTM I will continue my path, even if with a different role. Finally, I want to thank all those who helped me in this adventure, and the many fans who have always given me that charge to give 222%. I still have a lot of things to do in life after 2021, but in the meantime there is still a goal we need to think about… thanks guys!”
