Belgium name Joel Smets replacement!

Johan Boonen has been appointed by the BMB board as the new manager of the national team for the Motocross of Nations. Johan Boonen succeeds Joel Smets who led the Belgian team for 11 years and decided at the end of last year to end his career as the country’s team manager.

Johan Boonen contested in the World Championship during the 80’s and 90’s with the best performance in the Grand Prix of Belgium at Namur in 1995. Johan has remained active in the motocross world with his company DT filters. The last 2 years he came to be the head of the organisation of the Belgian Grand Prix Motorcross in Lommel.

The non-profit association Team Belgium, which was set up by Joel Smets for the promotional support of the team, will continue in the same way with Johan as chairman.

Johan Boonen: “The Belgian motocross sport is experiencing difficult times and I want to take on my responsibility as an ex-GP rider. I did this before with the Belgian Grand Prix and when I heard that Joel decided to quit as a team manager, I wanted to work together with the GP Limburg team to continue the successes that he has made. Belgium is still a large motocross country with currently 6 GP riders, some with podium ambitions. A Belgian team must also have goal of winning the most prestigious motocross race in the world”.

Olivier Rougraff, BMB chairman: “I am of course very pleased that Johan with the team of GP Limburg is prepared to take over this difficult task from Joel together with the volunteers of Team Belgium who will certainly provide him with the necessary support. We have signed an agreement to start the next three events including this year in Redbud in the United States on October 7, 2018. Our team certainly has the chance to win the title!”
