Arco MXGP race report: Gajser and Watson end season on a high!

Tim Gajser ended his season in style with his his fifth GP win of the season after a great duel with Romain Febvre.

The Kawasaki rider came out on top in race one, passing Gajser for the win with the HRC Honda rider unable to find a way back by despite pushing hard at the end to do so.

In race two it was Gajser who got into the lead after pasing Seewer and, by the time Febvre was into second, Gajser had a two-three second lead and the Frenchman just couldn’t close the gap. Always hovering around five second marlk, Febvre went to put in a charge with five minutes to go but went down and had to settled for second as Gajser cruised to the win.

Gajser commented: “I was enjoying it a lot, it was unbelievable winning the last one as well. I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone. It’s so emotional because I really wanted to win the last GP, i really put everything together, we all did. I would like to say thank you to my mechanic Nico, yesterday he told me after seven years we are splitting, he won’t work anymore in GP because he has a family and I totally understand, this one is for you Nico.”

Gautier Paulin took an emotional podium in third overall after a great ride in race two, his final ever GP moto, to pass teammate Seewer for third and ensure third on the day and fifth in his last MXGP championship.

Clement Desalle also, in his last ever GP, had a decent day except for colliding with Jeremy Seewer landing off a jump while pushing hard for fourth in race two ! Desalle, after a seventh in race one, seemed a bit spooked and crashed a lap later but still held on for seventh again and fifth overall on an emotional day for both Desalle and Paulin, two of the big hitters in MXGP over the last ten years calling time on their distinguished careers.

Tony Cairoli lost second in the championship after going straight on in turn one having his bumped by Tonus who got bumped by Gajser in the race to holeshot! A bent shift lever forced the nine-time world champ out of the moto giving a very impressive and consistent Jeremy Seewer second in the series, but third in toughest championship in the world having been a title contender for virtually all of the season is no disgrace when you are 35 years old!

Ben Watson went out on top after winning the final MX2 race of his career! The Brit had a third in race one after Vialle holeshot and checkout out but when the Frenchman hit the deck in turn one and race two with Watson taking the holeshot the GP win was on!

Watson however was hounded by his teammate Geerts with the two coming close to contact but Watson held the gas on round the outside to keep Geerts behind him! The with a few minutes to go Geerts got it wrong in a rut and headbutted the bank unfortunately leaving the talented Belgian ended the season on a stretcher.

Watson still didn’t have it all his own way with Beaton, smelling anther moto win, pushing hard and closing up on the Brit but Watson showing brilliant mentula strength, held on despite race long pressure to take the moto win and the overall in a brilliant display on the Italian hard pack!

After his first turn crash Vialle showed his real speed putting in the fastest laps of the race at times coming through the field, but two more mistakes ended his bid for GP victory however, he still salvaged fifth pace and second on the podium!

Watson, who also moved up to fifth in the championship, said: “What a way to end my career, I actually cannot believe! I had an amazing start again, I put in a solid race. I am sorry for my teammate who I guess crashed I hope he’s doing well because that is not what we want to see. I’m so happy for all the team, I just want to say a huge thank you to the Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha team, it’s been an amazing three years.”
