Andrea Dovizioso speaks out about racing Motocross in 2021

MotoGP star and Grand Prix winner Andrea Dovizioso has spoken out about his motocross aims for 2021 and claims he won’t be eying dedicated national or even international competition. The 35-year old Ducati rider has sensationally decided to walk away from MotoGP next season for what is supposedly a sabbatical year and in which he has already stated his aim as having more time to race motocross.

The Italian is madly passionate for dirtbikes and even had to deal with a broken collarbone sustained in an MX crash earlier this summer and before the MotoGP term began in Spain.

Although ‘Dovi’ could compete in the Italian domestic series, the Internazionali D’Italia or even consider the EMX2T (won for the third time by 40-year old Brad Anderson in Italy last week) he insists he still does not have the capacity to compete at that level, despite being a regular MX rider.

“No, no…this is a dream!” he claimed, exclusively. “Motocross is a different world, especially when you want to do that at 35-years old is a different story! In motocross they are living in a strange situation in this moment because the level of European and the world championship is one thing, all the other championships are in a completely different level. And it’s impossible to stay there, and the riders who are racing in the European championship are training like they are for the world championship. So, in Belgium, in Holland, they stay there in the winter, they have a lot of hours on the bike, they are racing for a long time, they are used to riding that kind of track.”

“[For me] This is a dream, it’s not possible,” he adds. “Even the Italian championship is hard [but] there are four categories, so if I will feel good I will do some races but next year – even though everything I’m doing is in a professional way – [the goal] will be to spend time with my friends and having fun. It’s not about going there and winning a title. I will go there with the support, because I’m lucky, I will have that chance. But the mentality is completely different. The training, the way I will train and enjoy, it will be in a professional way because I like to do that, not because I have to do that.”

Dovizioso is from Forli, the adjacent town to the Faenza circuit and where MXGP held a triple header of the 2020 series. He is one of many who regularly ride motocross in MotoGP; Marc Marquez, Alex Marquez, Maverick Viñales, Jack Miller and Fabio Quartararo are just some of the names that regularly like to hit the berms.
