Who impressed: MXGP Indonesia

Jeffrey Herlings: What a performance by Jeffrey Herlings in Indonesia. He said he promised his team he wouldn’t go for the win – but got carried away and went for it anyway and won the GP th n promptly apologised to his team for breaking his promise! Herlings has a huge heart and massive determination and when both riders really wanted to win it was Herlings who made less mistakes and got the job done despite his injury.

It couldn’t have went any better for the Dutchman and gives him a bit more momentum while taking away some of Carioli’s. Herlings kept his 12 point lead in the champoinship and with Cairoli nursing a very swollen thumb, the weekend just past could be a pivotal point in the 2018 world championship.

Romain Febvre: After a many GPs of just missing the podium, Febvre once again made the podium even if it was a close call! Febvre pushed hardness in both motos and had good speed both times out but it was his battle with Gajser and ultimately a late race pass in the final moto that got Febvre third on the box. Febvre again started behind the good guys but he appears to be coming into good form not his injuries and healing up, and like Gajser, with Loket coming up he will be hoping to get closer to the number one spot. Febvre also appears in a battle with Paulin for the final MXoN spot in the states so it’s everything to play for in the final three of the season.

Febvre commented: “I am happy with this weekend. It’s an important step for me because I haven’t been able to train properly since Germany when I hurt my ankle. When the track, is not so difficult I can feel strong for the whole race, but on tracks like the last one in Ottobiano and with the weather being so hot I felt like my condition was not there. I actually stayed in Italy after Ottobiano to train in the hot weather for this race. It was good and I feel like I am getting better and better every weekend and it’s nice to stand on the podium for the second time.”

Tim Gajser: He’s almost there! Gajser’s aggressive riding at the begging of race two to pass Cairoli to get into the lead was more reminiscent of his 2016 world title winning season. Gajser is clearly getting more confident and willing to push hard again, he wants to win and wants to challenge the KTM guys.

Yes, Tim doesn’t quite have 30 minutes in him yet at that intensity but his intentions are there and his feeling on the bike seems to be back. The more starts he gets to see the pace the sooner Gajser will be able to run his old pace for a full race distance and we might just have another potential winner on our hands!

Max Anstie: His results didn’t show his speed but Anstie was riding very well all weekend in Indonesia. He worked his way into the top five on Saturday after and average start only for a late race crash to ruin his Sunday gate pick. It meant two more come from behind rides but Anstie is showing the speed and if he gets away with the big hitters is showing he s the speed to go for the podium again.
