Who impressed: MXGP in Spain

Tony Cairoli: The Italian bounced back from losing the last three motos to Herlings by getting his first double moto win of the season. Cairoli was on point in both motos, going through the pack in race one and shadowing Gautier Paulin race two until he saw Herlings getting too close so the Italian turned up the wick and took the lead. “I am really happy about the weekend, I am still checking for the best set-up on the bike but we are in a good way, we made some changes on the bike and stepped it up in a good way.“ commented Cairoli on his day. It means both He and Herlings are tied on points for the lead of the world championship but there are still 17 rounds to go in this already captivating championship!

Gautier Paulin: The Frenchman was very, very good all weekend and looked superb on the bike on the technical jumpy track that clearly suited his riding style. A crash in race one probably thwarted his first podium but Paulin passed Cairoli in race two to lead some laps and had some great flow on the circuit. When Paulin rides like he did in Spain he is a joy to watch with his smooth style, hopefully he can carry that confidence into the rest of the season!

Clement Desalle: The Belgium is quietly having a good season and lies third in points. He doesn’t have the speed of the KTM duo but he is there every weekend and is battling hard to be the best of the rest. Desalle admitted in the press conference that while he is happy with third he would prefer to win but acknowledged the speed he needs to go with the KTM guys isn’t quite there yet. But after his injury in Assen a Desalle will feel he still had more to come and with the hard pack coming up he might just be closer to the front.

Max Nagl: There were a few raised eyebrows when Max Nagl switched to TM but the German is proving to be very competitive on the blue machine. Nagl was strong again in Spain, getting himself into the top ten and by all accuonts Nagl is an excellent test rider so his results could get even better as the season progresses but it’s nice to see another manufacturer in the mix at the top level of MXGP.

Arminas Jasikonis: The big Lithuanian had a lot of unexpected changes at the end of last season but he is beginning to look comfortable on the Assomotor Honda. He grabbed 15th off Graeme Irwin on the ast lap of race one and significantly did his fastest lap of the race on that lap to do it showing his fitness is on point. Race two was even better with a tenth place to put him a solid 12th in the world championship after three rounds despite not being on a factory team this year.
