Who impressed: MX2 World Championship – China

Coming into the final round, Tom Vialle was chasing third in the championship in his rookie season. The French rider had a good weekend at a track that you’d say maybe wouldn’t have suited him but that didn’t stop Vialle as he’s becoming the complete rider.

In China went 3-2 for second overall and the second moto he was throwing everything at Prado with two laps to go. In truth, Vialle was probably the quicker of the two as Prado didn’t look comfortable – we haven’t said that much this year! In the end Vialle finished fourth in the championship which was an unbelievable rookie season for him – he’s proved a lot of people wrong.

China was Calvin Vlaanderen’s last ever MX2 World Championship race as he ages out of the class in 2020. There would have been no better way for the HRC Honda rider to end his MX2 career than to get on the box and that’s exactly what he done ending up third overall.

A 2-4 second card was enough for third overall. Shortly after the Chinese GP the KNMV confirmed he’ll be racing Assen for the Dutch at this years MXoN so it’s been a superb weekend for Vlaanderen. Assen will be Vlaanderen’s last MX2 race and then he can hopefully focus on MXGP – if he secures a ride.

Riding a smart race this weekend was Jago Geerts as third place in the championship was in his favour as long as he done nothing stupid.  The Belgian has been crashing a bit too much this season and even crashed during the qualifying race but he kept it on two wheels when it mattered on race day.

In the moto’s, Geerts finished 3-4, one spot behind Vialle in both races which was the key! It secured third overall in the MX2 World Championship in what’s been a good season for Geerts. In 2020, he’ll go for the title and in terms of talent, he will go in as some people’s favourite. Starts need to improve and he’s going to have to cut down on the crashes though.

Just like Vlaanderen, it was Iker Larranaga’s last ever MX2 World Championship race due to the age rule. The Spaniard who’s pretty under rated ended his MX2 career on a high as he secured eighth overall. One of his better GP results this year.

It’s also thought that it was Larranaga’s last GP with the Marchetti KTM team so he’s on the look out for an MXGP ride in 2020. Before that though Larranaga will race for Spain in the MX2 class on his Marchetti KTM. It’ll be one last chance to impress.
