Who impressed: MX2 in Trentino!

Who impressed: MX2 in Trentino!

It was almost the perfect weekend for the young Spanish sensation, Jorge Prado as he was just one lap away from going 1-1 at round four of the MX2 World Championship. Prado had a tough start to the season in Argentina with a big crash but he’s well and truly put that behind him and he was super-fast at the weekend.

The first moto was perfect as he just checked out and controlled things at the front, no one could get near him as he looked so comfortable around the slick, hard pack track. In the second moto it was looking like the same thing would happen but Covington got around Prado on the last lap. Prado choose the wrong line and perhaps a little bit of inexperience showed but none the less it was a great weekend for him as he stood on the top step of the podium. Prado gained seventeen championship points on title rival, Pauls Jonass!

The ACL injury that Thomas Covington picked up at the Motocross Des Nations last year really hindered the American’s preparation for this season but it’s nice to see him back at the front where he belongs.

When Covington first made the move over from America there’s no way he’d have excelled at a track like Arco but he’s clearly been putting in the work and what used to be his weakness is now one of his strengths! A solid fifth in the first race give him confidence and he took the win in the second moto for second overall. He’ll be hoping that’s a turn of the corner now and he’ll be a consistent front runner once again.

There’s no doubt about it, the story of the MX2 season class so far has to be Henry Jacobi. The German has showed great speed this year but hasn’t really had the results to show for it so far but it all fell into place at the weekend.

The STC Husqvarna rider has his starts dialled that’s for sure and that makes life easier, he got out in second in the first moto and stayed there until around the half way mark. Olsen found his way past but Jacobi hung in there and took advantage of a few mistakes from the Danish rider and Jacobi came home in a superb second position. In the second moto he looked to be riding a bit tight, perhaps thinking about the potential podium! Jonass and Jacobi collided pushing him back to twelfth and a podium looked dead and buried. However, Jacobi dug deep and got back into tenth which gave him his first MX2 podium with a third overall. It’s nice to see the hard work finally paying off and he really does deserve his podium. If he continues to ride like that he might just add more podiums to his name too.

The start of the season has been solid for Russian, Vsevolod Brylyakov who’s a rider with plenty of potential and he reminded us of that this weekend.  It’s the last year in the class for Brylyakov so it’s important he impresses this year to earn that MXGP ride for 2019.

You can tell he was happy to see some hard pack and he ended up ninth and third in the moto’s to just narrowly miss out on the podium. Fourth overall is a step in the right direction and he rode really well in the second moto. He’ll hope to carry that speed into the rest of the season now and perhaps he’ll be on the box soon.

It’s no secret that Dutch talent, Davy Pootjes prefers the sandy conditions but his best ride of the season so far was at the hard pack track of Arco. The LRT KTM rider was very solid coming home in eighth and sixth to secure sixth overall.

Sometimes I feel that Pootjes tries too hard and due to that makes too many mistakes but it’s nice to see him have two good moto’s in Trentino. It’s important to be consistent and hopefully that’s something he can improve on as he’s certainly more than capable.

Making a return to racing this weekend at his home GP was Michele Cervellin after picking up a knee injury during the first round in Argentina. The Martins Technology Honda rider was the best Italian on the day which will please him.

Sixth and eleventh in the moto’s meant Cervellin ended up an impressive seventh overall. The Italian has showed us flashes of what he can do before but he’s struggled to do it over the course of the entire season but he’ll be hoping this year can change that and that he can be a regular top ten rider.
