Who impressed: MX2 at Redsand!

Who impressed: MX2 at Redsand!

Is there any stopping Pauls Jonass? That’s six moto wins from a possible six to keep up his 100% record. The MX2 World Champion looks to have stepped it up yet again this season. He’s working with Harry Everts and it looks to be paying off.

Jonass’ starts are on point but not only that, when it looks like he might get passed he always steps it up – he has more speed if required! It’s looking like a bad start might be the only thing to stop him from winning at the moment. It would take a brave man to bet against him for the championship, he already has a thirty points gap in the championship race.

Spanish sensation, Jorge Prado has well and truly put a bad first round behind him. Prado has bounced back in style by getting on the podium at Valkenswaard and now at Redsand too. The Spanish crowd were fully getting on their man and Prado didn’t disappoint, he might not have won but a second overall is good progress.

The young Spanish rider will have fond memories when he looks back on this weekend as it’s always nice to ride in front of your home fans. After a bad first round, Prado has already lifted himself up to third in the championship race, the next target for him should be a moto win, he’s more than capable!

Husqvarna GP rider, Thomas Kjer Olsen really is Mr Consistent as he’s been on the podium at all three of the rounds so far this season. Olsen was rapid at Redsand, you could tell he spent a lot of his time there during the winter as he had the speed to win.

In the first moto he got a bad start and was outside the top ten but he rode well to come all the way back to third. In the second moto he was at the front from the start and was applying the pressure on Jonass but unfortunately, he crashed which put to bed any hopes of a moto win. After the crash he regrouped by passing Lawrence to get back to third.

Olsen will want to turn these podiums into a win soon but is happy with where he’s at right now, “There are lots of positives to take from this GP and I’m happy with the progress we’ve made. I felt good all weekend here in Spain. I didn’t get the best of starts in the opening moto and this made everything harder for me. Fortunately, my start was a lot better in moto two and I could really show my speed. I am a little bit disappointed I went down while I was running second. I was in a very good position to push Jonass for the lead. Overall, my speed was really good this weekend and my fitness as well. We continue working hard and I’m looking forward to the following round in Italy now.”

That’s more like it from American rider, Darian Sanayei. Since coming over from the USA and moving up to the MX2 World Championship last season he’s showed us glimpses of what he can do. The DRT Kawasaki rider really gelled with the track this weekend and was flying in every single session.

Last year Sanayei finished in eleventh during his rookie season in the class which was solid but he’ll want to improve on that this year and if he continues to ride like that then he absolutely will. Sanayei needs to figure out how to ride like that and show that speed every GP then he should be a consistent front runner.  The first moto this weekend was especially impressive as he was buried down in twentieth on the first lap but he came back to a brilliant, hard fought sixth.

Hitachi KTM UK’s Conrad Mewse always has no problem running at the front when he gets a good start and he did exactly that this weekend. Mewse got a great start in the first moto, he even briefly led on the first lap after passing Henry Jacobi. There’s nothing much the Brit could do about Pauls Jonass going past him but he was holding second until two laps to go. Unfortunately, Prado and Olsen got around him but fourth equals his best moto finish in MX2.

The second moto wasn’t quite as good as he made a mistake which meant he lost some positions but a ninth-place finish still meant he ended up an impressive sixth overall. We all know Mewse is capable of those performances every week so he’ll be hoping to keep it up.

It’s hard not to be impressed with the determined Jed Beaton. The F&H Kawasaki rider is a rookie this year but he’s riding like an MX2 veteran! Eighth and seventh in the moto’s meant he was able to put two good results together which is very encouraging.

Beaton is working with Marc De Reuver and it’s looking like the pair have had a productive winter. After three rounds, Beaton sits seventh in the championship standings and the best placed rookie, he’ll be hoping to maintain these kind of results throughout the entire season.

Valkenswaard didn’t go to plan for Bas Vaessen after he hurt his shoulder and that was a shame as he could have put in some good results at his home GP. Vaessen was riding in some pain and discomfort at the weekend weekend but despite that his results were good.

Vaessen crossed the line eleventh in both the moto’s as that seemed to be his position at Redsand. A very solid weekend for the 114 Motorsports Honda and he’ll be hoping to build on it during the course of the season. The hard pack track at Trentino will be a challenging one for Vaessen as he prefers sand so it’ll be interesting to see what his speed is like there.

Two riders that deserve a mention are Samuele Bernardini & Jorge Zaragoza. Bernardini hasn’t had an ideal winter after picking up an injury but it was nice to see him run at the front for a while in the first moto – he even passed Hunter Lawrence. The Italian eventually faded to nineth but twelfth overall is a step in the right direction. With his home GP next up he’ll be looking for even more there. Zaragoza definitely has a lot of talent but injuries have made it difficult for him. The Spaniard missed half of the 2017 season and when he returned he only collected two championship points. This weekend could be a turning point though as he finished thirteenth in the first moto. The Ausio Yamaha rider will hope for more results like that in the coming GP’s to remind everyone of his talent.
