Who Impressed: EMX250 – Matterley Basin

What a weekend it was for Italian rider, Alberto Forato who dominated proceedings at round one of the EMX250 series. The Italian looks like a new rider on the Husqvarna and looks much more smoother this year. If he keeps riding like he did at Matterley Basin he’s going to take some stopping.

In the past, starts had been a problem for Forato but they were much better at the weekend and the Italian is super happy. “The starts were my problem but this weekend I started pretty good. In the first moto just in side the top ten and third in the second moto.  It was crazy, I was like this is good ey! It’s good to start at the front because it makes it so much easier (laughs)”.

Signing with Assomotor Honda for 2019, Stephen Rubini looks good in red. The French rider had some strong results in MX2 last year and will be looking to win the EMX250 series this year. At Matterley Basin he ended up second overall but has stressed that he wants to win sooner rather than later.

Rubini has also highlighted his starts as an area for improvement. “Actually not so much because I want to win but second overall is okay for the first round. I’m going to work now to be better and to be on top of the podium. For the first one it was okay, actually I have to work on my starts. Physically I was okay and the bike worked really good so I’m happy about that”.

It was hard to know what to expect from BUD Kawasaki’s, Jimmy Clochet coming into the EMX250 season but he had a good first round at Matterley Basin. The French rider went 4-9 to earn fifth overall which could see him in the title hunt as the season continues.

A lot is expected of Rene Hofer this year and he had a good first race in the class. Unfortunately, his starts weren’t good at all but he came through the pack well and passed some good riders. 7-7 doesn’t sound amazing but considering his bad starts he rode well. If he can improve his starts then he can be on the podium sooner rather than later.

Riding in front of his home crowd, Josh Gilbert had plenty of support but like Hofer had really bad starts. The Buildbase Honda rider came from seventeenth to ninth in moto one. In the second moto he was pretty much dead last and came back up to tenth. It shows the speed he had and it’s an opportunity missed to get on the podium but he’ll be hoping to get out of that gate during round two in Arco.

Young Swede, Tim Edberg had a disappointing season as a rookie but he’s made the move to the JWR Yamaha team and already looks much better this year. He went 15-11 in the moto’s to end up thirteenth overall. He’ll be happy with his first round and shows he’s had a good winter behind him.

Young Dutch rider, Raf Meuwissen was making his EMX250 race debut and he surprised many at round one. Not only did he easily qualify but he even got the holeshot in the first race and led which is a new feeling for Meuwissen. After two good starts he faded to 13th in both moto’s but for his first EMX125 race that’s encouraging – he should only get better.
