Who impressed: EMX250 in Latvia!

Who impressed: EMX250 in Latvia!

It was a great weekend for Assomotor Honda rider, Mathys Boisrame as he clinched his second EMX250 overall victory of the season. In the first moto, Boisrame was in second and timed his attack to perfection. He moved into the lead with two laps to go and held on for the first moto victory.

The talented French rider didn’t ride just as well in the second moto. He was sat in fourth until the last lap before he lost a position to come home in fifth but it was still good enough to earn his second overall victory. Boisrame is now becoming the danger man in the championship as he’s moved into third and is only eight points off the lead. He seems to be the man on the move in terms of the championship chase.

Danish talent, Mikkel Haarup really is the real deal. The Ice One Husqvarna rider might be a rookie but he’s already got the speed to win. Unfortunately, Haarup got a really bad start in the first moto but worked his way from fifteenth to seventh and if he didn’t stall it on the penultimate lap he might have had a fifth!

Haarup made sure he got a better start in the second moto and he actually got the holeshot. A good start was all he needed and he led every lap to bring home the moto victory – he was the only rider to set a lap time in the 1.59’s too. The rookie ended up second overall and despite missing the first round through injury sits eighth in the championship. There’s no doubt, Haarup could be the next big thing after the rise of Prado and Geerts from the EMX250 championship over the past few seasons.

Just how solid is Mel Pocock? The Revo Husqvarna rider arguably had his best round of the series so far. At times his good starts have been helping him but in Latvia he was able run his own. In the first moto he came home in a solid fifth but it was the second moto where he looked really good!

Pocock got a great start in the second moto as he was in second and he looked really comfortable and never really had much pressure from behind which shows he’s making good progress. The Brit is only two points off the championship chase. With his home GP coming up next he’ll want to get on the podium yet again!

It’s hard to believe but Martin Barr still hasn’t got an overall podium in the EMX250 series, Latvia is a track that suits the Revo Husqvarna rider but again he just missed out. It was a similar round for Barr like the previous rounds, he used his experience and did enough to keep hold of the red plate.

You feel that once Barr gets better starts then a podium is just around the corner but the priority for Barr is the championship and he’s got a two points advantage over Pocock. Barr and Boisrame had a great battle in the second moto which was great to watch, Barr edged out the French rider on the final lap which he’ll be pleased about. With Matterley Basin the next stop in the EMX250 Championship it could be a good track for Barr to finally clinch a podium.

It’s been a disappointing start to the season for rookie, Gianluca Facchetti. However, Latvia was a huge step in the right direction for the 125cc world champion. The Silver Action KTM rider took the holeshot in the first moto but quite quickly dropped to third. However, Facchetti responded well and was able to stay in third for the rest of the moto which would have done his confidence the world of good.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t replicate the good start in the second moto as he was down in tenth on the first lap but he rode well to come back up to fifth. Fifth overall is much better for the Italian and he’ll want to keep those sort of results up for the remainder of the season.

Young Estonian talent, Karel Kutsar has showed good speed this season so far but has been a bit inconsistent. The Estonian Express KTM rider looked comfortable in the sandy conditions of Kegums, he is known for his sand riding! In the first moto he led for the majority of the race before Boisrame just pipped him to the win but second was still a good result.

Kutsar was running in the top five in the early stages of the second moto but then took a crash which meant he dropped down the pack. After the crash he never really recovered in truth so couldn’t do any better than fourteenth but he still secured sixth overall. As the season progresses he’ll be wanting to put two good moto’s together and he’s certainly got the speed to do just that.

There was only the one two-stroke in the class at Latvia and that was GL12 KTM’s, James Dunn. After winning the final round of the series last season, the start of the 2018 campaign hasn’t really went according to plan for the Brit.

However, Dunn put in two good moto’s as he looked comfortable in the sandy conditions. Sixth in the first moto was definitely a good start to his weekend and he backed that up with thirteenth sandwiched between Brian Moreau and Karel Kutsar which shows just how competitive the series is. Dunn ended up eighth overall which is something to build on after a disappointing start to his season.

Fourteen years old, yes, Jett Lawrence is only fourteen but you wouldn’t think it when you see him riding a bike! In the first moto he was outside the top thirty but rode the wheels of his Suzuki to climb all the way to an impressive fifteenth position.

In the second moto, the Aussie took a much better start as he was sitting in sixth. Lawrence was staying right with Barr until around the half way mark which is very impressive for a fourteen year old. To put it into perspective Barr is sixteenth years older than the Aussie and he could still run with him. Unsurprisingly, Lawrence did drop off towards the end of the moto as he won’t be as fit as the front runners just yet but he finished seventh which is a superb result! Keep your tabs on the young Aussie as he’s got some serious talent.

A shout out to the young Dutch talent, Roan van de Moosdijk who had a disaster of a first moto with a DNF. However, the second moto was much better as he ended up in third – he’s capable of that on a regular basis so hopefully we will start to see that from him.
