Who impressed: EMX250 Championship – Assen

What a weekend it was for Jett Lawrence who stole the show at Assen. Remarkably he was only on an 85cc last year but make the big step to the 250cc this year and he saved his best performance to the final round. The Aussie went 1-1 on the day – the only EMX250 rider to do that this year.  Lawrence really showed just how much of a talent he is in Assen.

A lot of people will be surprised to see Lawrence do this during his rookie year but he always had the goal to stand on top of the box. “My goal always was to try and get on top of the box before the season ended”. Lawrence commented. Unfortunately the Suzuki rider only has one race left in Europe before heading to America – what a shame that he won’t race the MX2 World Championship next year!

Finally, young Norwegian and EMX250 rookie, Kevin Horgmo finally put two good moto’s together. Throughout the course of the season the Creymert KTM rider has showed great speed but putting two good moto’s together seemed to be his problem.

However, it all clicked into place during the final round at Assen for Horgmo as he ended the season on a high by going 3-2 to secure second overall. Now the plan for him will be to put in a strong winter and then challenge for the title in 2019.

When you look at Assen you wouldn’t have put it down as a Tom Vialle track as he usually excels in the hard pack but he rode great in Assen.  The French youngster actually led for eight laps in the first moto before coming home an impressive second.

It looked like Vialle had third in the bag in the second moto too before a crash dropped him down the order. Due to the crash he ended up seventh but it was still enough to get on the box with a third overall. The French talent ended the season with the LRT KTM team but it will be very interesting to see what the future holds for him – EMX250 again or move up to MX2? Time will tell on that one.

What a great performance it was for Caleb Grothues, where did that come from? The Aussie had a good ride at the last round of the Italian Championship coming into Assen and that really seemed to help him.

Grothues had by far his best round of the EMX250 series by finishing ninth in both moto’s but it was enough to secure a fifth overall. The result should definitely help with his confidence heading into winter and we might just see the best of him in 2019.

After picking up a big injury in winter the season hasn’t gone according to plan for Todd Kellett after some impressive rides last year.  We saw a bit of the Todd Kellett from last year at Assen as he looked comfortable and seemed to gel well with the track.

Kellett was battling with plenty of the front runners all weekend long. The Verde KTM rider finished a superb seventh in the first moto which was by far his best moto of the year. Another solid thirteenth in moto two meant he ended sixth overall at Assen. A much better weekend for the Brit and that should do his confidence the world of good.

They failed to put two really good moto’s together but Erik Willems and Josiah Natzke had one good moto a piece and deserve a mention.

Willems who’s a regular in the EMX300 series got a wildcard entry for Assen and finished the first moto in a very impressive sixth – perhaps he even surprised himself with that moto!

As for Natzke, we know just how talented he is and if he can regain his form then there’s no doubt he’ll be a front runner. In the first moto he came home in tenth which is his best moto in a long time. Hopefully that will help rebuild his confidence and we can see the best Josiah Natzke back in 2019.
