Who Impressed: EMX125 – Valkenswaard

Coming into the first round of the EMX125 series there was a lot of pressure on Mattia Guadagnini as he’s the clear favourite to win the title – especially after battling with Prado in pre-season! At Valkenwaard he didn’t go 1-1 like everyone expected but he still did enough to win the overall. As far as he’s concerned he done his job at round one and is in a good position to win the title.

What a weekend Jörgen-Matthias Talviku had! The Estonian looks like a new rider this year getting second overall at Valkenswaard. In 2018, he showed some good speed but never threatened for the podium positions.

It’s pretty clear that Talviku has had a productive winter and looks really good on the Husqvarna. Credit to Tanel Leok too for spotting his potential and deciding to sign him up to his A1M Motorsport team.

Along with Guadagnini, Tom Guyon is one of the favourite for the title as he finished a strong fifth in the championship as a rookie last year. The one question mark the French rider did have coming into the season was would his sand riding be good enough but he’s clearly worked on the sand over the winter.

Guyon went 7-1 for third overall and if it wasn’t for a crash in the first moto he might have just stood at the top step but he is a clearly a genuine title threat.

Just how good is Kay de Wolf?! He’s a real talent, there’s no doubt about it. It was his first EMX125 race and in front of his home crowd too but he didn’t really seem all that nervous and he put on a great show in front of his home crowd.

He was by far the best rookie as he ended up fourth overall missing the podium by just a single point. The Dutch talent might just go from strength to strength as he continues to adapt and learn during the course of the season. “I expected nothing (coming into this race), just to do a good race and do my best, that was all I expected. Then in the first heat I was P5 then P2 in the second heat. It’s unbelievable”, De wolf commented.

Last season, Oriol Olivier didn’t really have the results that matched his speed as he only picked up forty-one points during the entire series. He’s clearly went away and worked hard during the winter as his race pace has improved.

The Spanish talent run at the front all weekend and went 5-4 in the moto’s which is a super start to the season. Olivier prefers the hard pack conditions so being that good at Valkenswaard should give him an extra boost heading into Arco this weekend.

There’s no doubt that Joel Rizzi has really stepped up his game in 2019. The Brit did do some rounds of the series last year on the Yamaha but only managed to pick up three championship points.

The move to the RFX KTM powered by PAR Homes and working with Neil Prince has really done the trick. It’s just a huge same the bike expired on him in the second moto otherwise he’d have been on that podium but he knows now he has what it takes. “I feel like I’m now one of the top boys that can have a go at winning the championship. I feel like I can race and beat them now”, Rizzi commented.

Looking at the results, you might not think Liam Everts performed that well. However, when you consider his size it’s impressive – he’s still  pretty small and could quite easily still be racing the 85cc.

Watching Everts ride, he has a lot of technique – he clearly has a good coach! Liam should only get better as he gets stronger and adapts to the 125cc – he could have a very promising future. He was the second best rookie at Valkenswaard which is promising signs.
