Who impressed: EMX125 – Lommel

What a weekend it was for Maddii Husqvarna rider, Mattia Guadagnini as he won in Lommel. You wouldn’t put the tough track down as a Guadagnini track and he might not have been the fastest but the fastest rider doesn’t always win.

The young Italian showed a lot of determination and didn’t make it easy for the riders behind him to make a pass, he was mentally very strong and that’s how he won the overall in Lommel. Despite missing the first two rounds of the series he’s climbed all the way back up to third in the championship. With two rounds remaining he’s 54 points behind Benistant, it’s unlikely he’ll close the gap but stranger things have happened!

The young Swedish talent of Filip Olsson was really really fast at Lommel and looked to love the challenging conditions. The one problem he had was with his starts as they were shocking and cost him the win, he was arguably the quickest rider in the class at Lommel.

In the first moto he was buried in sixteenth and came all the way to fifth and only 9 seconds off the race winner in what was an exciting race. The start in the second moto was better as he was sat in eighth and he worked his way up to second by the end of the moto to secure second overall but starts definitely cost him his win this weekend. On a positive note there’s nothing wrong with his speed!

The new generation of Italians seem to be pretty good at riding the deep sand as Andrea Bonacorsi joined Guadagnini on the box. The Silver Action KTM rider has shown some good speed this year but has been a bit inconsistent but he looked the best he ever has in Lommel.

A 4-4 scorecard meant that Bonacorsi ended up third overall and that’s arguably the best ride of his life so far in his short career. Now he knows what it takes to get on the box he’ll be hoping for plenty more during his career.

Young Swedish talent, Arvid Luning is another one that knows how to ride the sand.  In the first moto he finished an excellent third place which is the best moto of his season so far.

In the second moto he again showed good speed and ended up fifth. Unfortunately, he missed out on the podium as Bonacorsi beat him in the second moto but the Swede now knows he has what it takes to get on the box so that should help his confidence.

It was a case of one good moto and one bad moto for Thibault Benistant. The young French talent won the first moto of the weekend to show he has no problem riding in the sand.

However, in the second moto he took a really bad start and then collided with Petr Polak as he was working his way through the pack. He eventually ended up thirteenth in moto two to end up fifth overall. However, looking at the championship and the bigger picture, the MJC Yamaha rider now has the red plate and it looks like he’ll walk away with the title this year.

It was the first EMX125 race back for Kjell Verbruggen after an injury and he put on a good show in Lommel. It’s important to remember that Verbruggen is still just a rookie in the EMX125 class and is enjoying his learning year.

A 13-8 scorecard meant he ended up eighth overall on his F4E KTM. The Dutch talent could be one to look out for in 2019 as he could be right at the front.
