Weekend watch: National championships take centre stage!

The US Nationals are in the home straight and round nine of the 12 round championship takes place at the picturesque Washougal.

The track is a welcome change to the loamy terrain of most of the other US races and the challenge will be throttle control and patience not aggression. It is one of the reasons a smooth Marvin Musquin was able to beat the aggressive Eli Tomac there last year and with Roczen now back in the mix don’t be surprised to see either former GP men be right on the pace with Tomac this weekend.

For Musquin the pressure is on to get another win to keep the points close and keep the pressure on Tomac heading into the last three rounds of the championship.

The 250 class is Aaron Plessinger’s to lose but on any given day a number of riders can win a moto or an overall. The slick track should suit Ferrandis but he is finding it diffult to get away in the top 10 out of turn one which is wrecking his chances of wins each moto.

Joey Savatgy hasn’t had much luck this year but Washougal might just suit his style while Austin Forkner is getting more and more frustrated at his bad luck and really wants to get at least a podium.

The British championship heads to Duns, Scotland for round five and despite p six weeks of amazing weather, it looks like there could be chance for some rain for the riders to contend with.

Jake Nicholls has a 19 point lead on Evgeny Bobryshev in the championshi, with defending champ Graeme Irwin a further 10 back in third. But Irwin and Tommy Searle could also be the men to watch this weekend with the duo going 1-2 at Desertmartin and showing good speed in the recent GP rounds.

Another interesting storyline is the battle to get on the British MXoN team. Nicholls is riding great and thinks he should go but Searle will probably think he should be going given his recent GP speed. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top in Scotland as the British series is the only time we get to see Nicholls and Searle face-off this season.

Both of course now have experience at Red Bud with Nicholls’ recent foray there a couple of weeks back that saw him take 10th overall while Searle of course raced there during his tenure in the States.

Italian Ivo Monticelli is flying at the GPs sand will be one to keep an eye on as will Elliott Banks-Browne who will be hoping to bounce back from a tough time at Desertmartin.

In MX2 it’s a question of can anyone stay close to Conrad Mewse? The teenage talent wowed the big crowd at Desertmartin with his blistering speed at th last round but a recent leg injury forced him to miss Loket and he hasn’t raced since Desertmartin at the end of June, so will that give the likes of Mel Pocock, Josh Gilbert, Martin Barr and Liam Knight a chance to back on terms with the championship leader?
