Weekend watch: MXGP and East/West SX shootout!

It’s another double header of the best dirt bike series’ in the world this weekend, with MXGP heading to the warmer climate of Spain to thaw out from Valkenswaard while supercross heads to Indianapolis that will see both East and West 250 classes race together for the first time this season.

MXGP is all about Cairoli and Herlings right now with Cairoli admitting he is focussed on winning this weekend in Redsand. Herlings has caught and passed Cairoli in three of the four motos so far, but Cairoli will point to his two crashed in Valkenswaard that prevented him winning. Herlings now leads by 6 points and with no-one currently able to get in between them Cairoli won’t want Herlings getting too far away, but stopping his winning momentum will be the most important.

Herlings like most of the riders have practiced at Redsand over the winter, but Cairoli hasn’t and it will be interesting to see if that has any affect on their tussle.

Steve Dixon made some interesting claims on MX Large this week stating that he had never see anyone ride a bike like Jeffrey Herlings in his entire time in the sport (stretching back to 1990) saying, “ Jeffrey has it all.” Geoff Meyer concurred saying he has never seen anyone like him, not even RC, Bubba, Everts or DeCoster. Just to be talked about in those terms is already a testament to Jeffrey’s skills and the level he has now brought the sport too.

It will be a big weekend for Jorge Prado in Spain, the talented teen came very close (three tenths of a second to be exact) to beating Pauls Jonass in Valkenswaard and with a sandy track in Spain, this might just be the moment Prado gets his first moto wins if not GP win if the year, but Jonass won’t be making it easy as the tension rises in the MX2 camp.

We are still waiting for Hunter Lawrence to show the form he had at the end of last season in the first moto of 2018. Lawrence described Valkenswaard as “so-so” and he is losing a lot of ground in the points to Jonass already I his bid to be world champ before he moves stateside. Redsand should suit Lawrence more than Valkenswaard but the pressure is building on the Aussie to produce the results he knows he is capable of.

The incredibly competitive EMX250 class starts this weekend with rookies and future starts like Faccetti and Moreau moving up from 125s competing against the more experienced guys like, Barr, Clarke, plus riders like Sihvonen, Charboneau, Renaux, Van de Moosdijk.

In America it looks like there is no stopping Jason Anderson for the title or Eli Tomac when it comes to race wins.

But the biggest storyline is the first East/West shootout that will see all the top names together and could play havoc with the points especially in the East coast with only 11 points separating Osborne and Forkner. 15 points separate West coast leader Plessinger from Joey Savatgy and again that could change significantly with all the best 250 supercross riders in one race.

So brace yourself for plenty of dirt bike excitement and drama over the entire weekend!
