Weekend watch – can Tomac rebound?

Weekend watch – can Tomac rebound?

There are a few interesting storylines to keep an eye on this weekend in AMA Supercross:

1. Can Tomac rebound from his DNF? Tomac is already 25 points down to rival Musquin and Ken Roczen in his first race back also has a healthy point and advantage over Eli. Word is Tomac won’t be at 100% this week with his shoulder injury ( 80% according to Steve Matthes on the Moto60 show) but he can’t really afford to lose many more points to the competition! The pressure is on Eli already.

2. Does Barcia back up his podium? Justin Barcia had his first podium since 2014 and in our interview with him after he says he feels like a new person. With a new attitude and his old pace back, Barcia rode strong all day on a bike that he looks very comfortable on, he would be a very interesting character to have back at the sharp end.

3. Is Roczen ready to win again? As soon as Ken Roczen went pole at A1 it felt like normal service was resumed and any minor doubts Roczen had had been answered – he was back. A bad start restricted Roczen’s results at A1 but he rode smart to get fourth through the field and immediately vented his frustration that he didn’t finish better. Now he knows he can win and we might see an even better Roczen at Houston and with Tomac back in the points, Roczen has a big chance this weekend and at the title.

4. Will Webb bounce back? Cooper Webb got into a bit of a battle with Ken Roczen in the heat race but from the moment he fell Webb, didn’t quite have the pace to challenge for the top 5 despite apparently looking really good in the off-season. Word was Webb had some arm-pump issues and, combined with Barcia, his fill-in teammate getting third, plus his hostility towards Roczen, Webb has a lot of motivation coming into Houston.

5. Can Justin Hill get a start? There was a lot made of Justin Hill’s switch to the JGR Suzuki team. Would it be competitive asked the sceptics, and after qualifying it looked like it would when Hill put it on pole. But in the nightshow Hill got two bad starts allowing the doubters to question the power of his bike out of the gate. The defending champ has work to do this weekend to vault himself back into championship contention and prove his bike has the power to ge this up front off the starts in such a deep field.

In the UK Arenacross, the series seems more wide open than ever after the surprise win for Buildbase Honda rider Charles Lefrancois but can he make it two in a row in Newcastle or will the favourites like Soubeyras and Ramette come to the fore after some hard racing in Manchester.

It promises to be another exciting weekend of indoor racing!
