Ulster Championship RD2: Results!

Ulster Championship RD2: Results!

Seaforde hosted the second round of the Ulster Championship and what a beautiful day it was! It was good to see plenty of spectators come out on may day to see some of the best riders in the country taking part.

In the MX1 class, Richard Bird’s confidence before the event would have been sky high after beating Stuart Edmonds in all three races at the last round of the Irish Championship. With Edmonds good results at the last round of the British Championship just goes to show how good he has been riding.

He didn’t disappoint at the second round of the Ulster Championship as he dominated all three moto’s. Once he got to the front of the pack he simply controlled the gap ahead of the rest of the field. Jim O’Neill who was contesting the British Championship just a day before travelled overnight to make it to Seaforde. He had a very strong day to finish all the moto’s in second to take second overall but just didn’t have enough for Bird.

Jordan Scott went quickest in qualifying as he put in a flyer of a lap during Superpole but he didn’t show the same speed in the races. He finished 3-4-3 in the moto’s as Craig Browne upped his game in the second moto to beat him. Scott did end up on the podium with third overall just edging out Craig Browne and Ryan Adair.

In the Semi-Expert’s it was Joshua McCorkell who won the overall winning two of the moto’s. Mark Dynes had a strong day also winning a moto but had to settle for second overall ahead of Christopher Orr.

The MX2 class is definitely more competitive as it has been in recent years with plenty of riders capable of taking the win with a good start.

It was Jason Meara that had a good day on his Norman Watt/RFX KTM as he won two moto’s out of the three and even while carrying a shoulder injury. In the second moto he had just moved into the lead before the red flag came out, that meant they moved the result back a full lap. As this was the case, Luke Smith won the second moto to stop Meara’s dominance. It’s nice to see Smith competing back home again and he is definitely a much stronger rider now than what he was before focusing his racing in England.

Glenn McCormick is starting to slowly get back to form, he saved his best to last and led the last moto of the day for over ten minutes before Meara found his way past. It was nice to see McCormick ride at the front again and he should only continue to get stronger, a win might not be far away!

James Mackrel and Jordon Keogh showed some good pace on the day but missed out on the podium as they finished fourth and fifth overall respectively.

Cailum Meara was the best Semi-Expert rider winning all three races. Sean and Paul Laverty rounded of the podium.

The next round of the Ulster Championship will take place at Tandragee on the 10th June and Neville Bradshaw is expected to make a return to racing. With Bird comfortably winning the MX1 class, it would be cool to see him race the MX2 class and make it even more competitive!
